Theme: Raising Spirit-Filled Disciples for the Unleashing Agenda

Introduction

Devotion: Acts 7:1–60

Theme: Raising Spirit-Filled Disciples

Today we continue our theme: Raising Spirit-Filled Disciples.

Acts 7 presents one of the clearest pictures of what a Spirit-filled disciple truly looks like. Stephen was not just a church worker. He was described as a man “full of faith and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5). When pressure came, what was inside of him came out.

If we want to raise Spirit-filled disciples, we must study Spirit-filled examples.

1. A Spirit-Filled Disciple Knows the Word

When Stephen stands before the Sanhedrin and the high priest asks, “Are these things so?” (Acts 7:1), he does not defend himself emotionally. He responds with Scripture.

From Abraham…

To Joseph…

To Moses…

To the wilderness…

To the prophets…

Stephen walks through Israel’s entire history. This was not memorized information for applause. This was revelation living inside him.

From Abraham,

To Joseph,

To Moses,

To the wilderness,

To the prophets —

He shows that God has always been moving.

This teaches us something powerful:

A Spirit-filled disciple is Word-filled.

You cannot be Spirit-filled and Biblically empty. The Spirit of God works through the Word of God. You cannot claim to be full of the Spirit and be empty of Scripture.

If we are raising disciples, we must raise men and women who know Scripture — not just quotes, but context.

We are not raising emotional believers.

We are raising grounded disciples.

2. A Spirit-Filled Disciple Sees God’s Bigger Plan

Stephen does not just repeat history — he reveals divine patterns.

• God called Abraham before there was a nation.

• God was with Joseph in Egypt.

• God appeared to Moses in the wilderness.

• God was not confined to a temple made with hands.

Stephen boldly declares:

“The Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands.” (Acts 7:48)

A Spirit-filled disciple understands that God is bigger than systems, traditions, and buildings.

God is not trapped in structures. He is after vessels.

We are not raising church attendees.

We are raising carriers of God’s presence.

3. A Spirit-Filled Disciple Speaks Hard Truth Boldly

Stephen then shifts from history to confrontation:

“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 7:51)

Notice this: He was full of the Spirit — yet he rebuked boldly.

Spirit-filled does not mean timid.

Spirit-filled does not mean people-pleasing.

It means courage under pressure.

Sometimes men of God will tell us hard truth to our face. Correction is not hatred. Rebuke is not rejection.

Stephen did not insult them from the flesh — he confronted them by the Spirit.

As a pastor, I can be hurt by the very people I am trying to preach to. But love does not allow us to wish evil upon them.

The Bible says:

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” (Romans 12:14)

“Love your enemies… and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)

Truth must be spoken. But it must be carried by love.

If we are raising disciples, we must teach them to speak truth in love — even when it costs them.

4. A Spirit-Filled Disciple Reflects Christ Under Pressure

When they heard Stephen’s words, they were furious. They gnashed their teeth at him (Acts 7:54).

But:

“Being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.” (Acts 7:55)

While others were enraged, he was focused on heaven.

This is spiritual maturity:

Chaos outside.

Clarity inside.

A Spirit-filled disciple keeps his eyes on Jesus in hostile environments.

Stephen made sure he died like Jesus.

“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” (Acts 7:59)

“Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” (Acts 7:60)

Jesus said on the cross:

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

Stephen echoed that same spirit.

Jesus also cried:

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46)

Jesus carried the full weight of sin. The pain of separation was real. Heaven did not visibly open at that moment — He endured the silence for our redemption.

But Stephen, in his pain, saw heaven open and the glory revealed.

Jesus knew His assignment and forgave.

Stephen saw the glory and forgave.

Both forgave.

The question for us is simple:

Who must we forgive today?

You cannot be a Spirit-filled disciple and hold grudges.

5. A Spirit-Filled Disciple Understands the Cost

Stephen became the first martyr of the Church.

Martyrdom means being killed because of Christ.

Revelation tells us:

The souls of those who had been slain for the word of God cried out, “How long, O Lord…?” And they were told to rest a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed. (Revelation 6:9–11)

There is heavenly awareness of persecution.

Across the world, believers still suffer and die for naming Jesus.

Now ask yourself:

Have we suffered to the point of losing our lives for Christ?

If not, why do we complain about preaching the gospel in a free country?

If we are serious about raising Spirit-filled disciples, we must raise believers who are ready to stand, speak, love, forgive, and — if necessary — suffer.

Conclusion: Raising Spirit-Filled Disciples

Stephen confronted.

Stephen rebuked.

Stephen forgave.

Stephen saw heaven.

He looked like Jesus.

Church, raising Spirit-filled disciples begins with becoming one.

📖 Chair Time

Read

Acts 7:1–60

Reflect

• Do I know the Word deeply — in context?

• Do I understand God beyond buildings and systems?

• Can I receive hard truth without offense?

• Who do I need to forgive?

• Am I bold in a comfortable nation?

Pray

Holy Spirit, fill me afresh. Root me deeply in Your Word. Give me courage to speak truth and humility to receive correction. Remove bitterness from my heart. Teach me to forgive like Jesus. Make me a Spirit-filled disciple who loves even under pressure. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🔥🙏🏾
