Overcoming the Power of Slothfulness (Part 1): Defeating Procrastination

Beloved,

Yesterday, we began looking at serving God with our time, and we spent time understanding one important truth: time lost can never be regained, except by the mercy and supernatural intervention of God.

I also shared my personal testimony of how the time invested in God’s work has never been in vain. The countless hours spent discipling young people, teaching God’s Word, praying with them, mentoring them and simply doing life together are now beginning to bear fruit.

Even as I write this devotion from the Pentecost Conference here in Dortmund, my heart is overwhelmed with gratitude. I have watched our young people serve with humility, honour and excellence. Many Apostles and leaders have approached me asking, “Pastor, how did you raise these young people?” Seeing their hunger for God and the transformation taking place in their lives reminds me that every hour invested in them was worthwhile.

Church, time invested in God’s Kingdom is never wasted.

There were moments when I arrived home exhausted. There were days when ministry demanded more of my time than I ever imagined. Yet today I can boldly say that every sacrifice was for a greater cause.

I also remember the early years of ministry in Basel. Someone once asked me,

“Why are you always in church? Why do you spend so many hours counselling people? Don’t you have a family?”

To some people, it looked like I was wasting my time. Others thought I was sacrificing too much of my family life for ministry.

Now, let me be clear. I strongly believe that spending quality time with your family is one of the greatest responsibilities every believer has. I teach that consistently because our first ministry begins at home.

However, God gives different graces and assignments to different people.

For me, one of the greatest investments of my time has been counselling people, praying with them and helping them find answers in Christ. Nothing brings greater joy than hearing someone say, “Pastor, God used you to change my life.”

Perhaps as you read this devotion today, you can also testify that my presence in your life has never been a waste of time. That is exactly what serving God with our time is about—using the life God has given us to impact the lives of others.

Jesus Himself said,

“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.”

— John 9:4 (NKJV)

Those words have always challenged me.

There is a season to labour.

There is a season to build.

There is a season to pour into others.

One day that opportunity will no longer be available. Therefore, while it is still day, we must work faithfully for the Kingdom of God.

🕰️ What Is Slothfulness?

The Bible speaks strongly against slothfulness.

Slothfulness is more than physical laziness. It is a careless attitude towards responsibility. It is the habit of delaying what should be done today. It is choosing comfort over purpose and excuses over obedience.

The slothful person is not always the one sleeping. Sometimes the busiest people are also the most slothful because they are busy doing everything except what God has called them to do.

One of the greatest expressions of slothfulness is procrastination.

🚫 The Danger of Procrastination

Procrastination is one of the greatest enemies of Christian growth.

It destroys ministries.

It destroys marriages.

It delays projects.

It prevents dreams from becoming reality.

Whenever there is something you know you should do today, yet you keep saying, “I will do it later,” you are planting the seed of procrastination.

The danger is that “later” often never comes.

Procrastination is taking the time God has already given you and investing it in something far less important.

Many people have wasted years chasing relationships that were never God’s will.

Some have spent years trying to impress people who never truly valued them.

Others have spent precious time filling emotional gaps that only Christ could fill.

Every time you postpone what God has asked you to do today, ask yourself one question:

What is the opportunity cost of delaying this assignment?

I am not only speaking to you.

I am speaking to myself.

When I look back over my own ministry, I realise that if I had procrastinated at certain critical moments, many of the testimonies we celebrate today would never have happened.

That is why we must guard our hearts against delay.

🌅 How Do You Spend Your Best Hours?

Some people proudly say,

“Pastor, I’m an early morning person.”

That is wonderful.

But let me ask you a question.

What do you do with those early morning hours?

Do you wake up simply to scroll through your phone?

Do you wake up only to go to the gym?

Do you wake up only thinking about breakfast or work?

Or do you first give God your best?

The Bible tells us,

“Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.”

— Mark 1:35 (NKJV)

Jesus gave His first moments to the Father.

Personally, I am different.

I am naturally more productive late at night. Many of these devotions are written when most people are asleep. That is when I spend extended time praying, studying and preparing.

Whether you are an early morning person or a late-night person is not the issue.

The real question is this:

Are you giving your best hours to God?

That is what matters.

💭 A Final Thought

Procrastination makes tomorrow heavier than today.

Every assignment delayed today requires greater effort tomorrow.

Every opportunity postponed becomes more difficult later.

That is why procrastination is not simply poor planning—it is often a subtle form of laziness.

Tomorrow, by the grace of God, we will go deeper into what the Bible teaches about slothfulness and laziness, and we will discover practical biblical principles for overcoming them.

May the Lord help us become faithful stewards of the precious gift of time He has entrusted to us.

1. Father, deliver me from every spirit of procrastination and help me to obey You immediately whenever You speak.

2. Lord, teach me to use my time wisely so that every day of my life will bring glory to Your Name.

3. Holy Spirit, give me the discipline to overcome laziness and help me become diligent in serving You and serving others.
