Introduction

Good morning church

In the first part of this chapter, we saw Satan bound for a thousand years and were reminded that, although there are different interpretations concerning this prophetic period, one truth remains unquestionable—God is sovereign. Satan has never been God’s equal, and everything happens according to the Lord’s perfect plan.

We also reflected on the incredible privilege God has prepared for His faithful people. John saw the saints reigning with Christ, and we were encouraged that every sacrifice made for the Kingdom of God is seen by the Lord. Serving Christ is never in vain, and those who remain faithful will share in His eternal reign.

As we come to the final section of Revelation 20 today, John records one of the most solemn scenes in all of Scripture—the Great White Throne Judgment. This passage calls each one of us to pause, examine our hearts, and remember that one day every person will stand before God. It is not written to fill us with fear, but to lead us to repentance, faithful living, and a greater urgency to share the Gospel while there is still time.

So, let us open our hearts once again and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to us through His Word.

John now brings us to one of the most solemn and sobering scenes in the entire Bible.

“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away…” (Revelation 20:11, KJV)

Church, imagine this moment. John sees a great white throne. The colour white speaks of God’s perfect holiness, righteousness, and justice. Before His glorious presence, the present heaven and earth flee away because nothing sinful can stand before the holiness of God.

John then says:

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God…” (Revelation 20:12, KJV)

This verse really made me think.

John says he saw the small and the great standing before God. On earth, we often separate people by status. Some are presidents, kings, billionaires, celebrities, and influential leaders. Others are ordinary people whom the world hardly notices. Yet on that day, every human being will stand on the same level before God.

Church, this teaches us never to envy anyone because of their position or wealth. Earthly success cannot exempt anyone from standing before God. Whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, famous or unknown, we will all give an account of our lives.

John continues:

”…and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life…” (Revelation 20:12, KJV)

Notice carefully that John speaks of books being opened, and then another book—the Book of Life.

The books record the works of every person. Nothing escapes God’s attention. Every word, every action, every motive, and every decision is known to Him. God is a perfectly righteous Judge.

Then John mentions the Book of Life.

Church, this is the book that matters most.

Our greatest ambition should not simply be to have our names known on earth but to have our names written in heaven.

John says:

”…and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” (Revelation 20:12, KJV)

This does not mean we are saved by our works. The Bible clearly teaches that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9). However, our works reveal whether our faith was genuine. A transformed life produces the fruit of obedience.

John continues:

“And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them…” (Revelation 20:13, KJV)

No one will be forgotten.

Whether someone died at sea, was buried on land, or lived thousands of years ago, every person will stand before God. His judgment is complete, perfect, and impartial.

Then John says something remarkable.

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” (Revelation 20:14, KJV)

Even death itself, our final earthly enemy, is destroyed forever. There will never again be another funeral, another cemetery, another tear caused by death. God’s victory will be complete.

Then comes perhaps the most sobering verse of the chapter.

“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15, KJV)

Church, I want to speak to you from my heart.

As I was reading this verse, I was not thinking about other people first. I was thinking about myself.

I found myself praying, “Lord, let my name remain in the Book of Life.”

Writing devotions will not save me.

Being a pastor will not save me.

Preaching sermons will not save me.

What matters most is that I continue walking faithfully with Jesus Christ until the very end.

That is my prayer, and I pray it will become your prayer as well.

This verse also reminds me why we must continue sharing the Gospel. Every person we meet has an eternal destiny. The neighbour next door, the colleague at work, the family member who does not yet know Christ, and even the stranger we pass on the street all matter to God. We never know whose life may be changed by one conversation about Jesus.

Church, while there is still breath in our lungs, the door of God’s grace remains open. Today is the day to repent. Today is the day to surrender our lives completely to Christ. Today is the day to ensure that our names are written in the Book of Life.

Reflection

Revelation 20 reminds us that life is bigger than the few years we spend on this earth. One day, every one of us will stand before our Creator. On that day, our wealth, achievements, titles, and earthly success will no longer matter. What will matter is whether we belonged to Jesus Christ and remained faithful to Him.

As we continue serving God, let us keep eternity before us. Let our lives reflect genuine faith, sincere repentance, and wholehearted obedience. May our greatest desire be to honour Christ in such a way that, when our earthly journey is over, we will hear Him say,

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21, KJV)

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding us through Your Word that one day we will stand before You. Search our hearts and reveal anything that does not please You. If there is anything in our lives that could draw us away from You, give us the grace to repent and to walk in obedience.

Lord, let our names remain written in the Book of Life. Help us to remain faithful until the very end. May the second death never have power over us, but may we reign with Christ forever in Your glorious Kingdom.

Give us boldness to share the Gospel with others while there is still time, so that many more people may come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

We thank You because You are faithful, Your promises are true, and Your victory is eternal.
