Will You Be Remembered?
Devotion By Reverend Joseph Antwi
📖 Romans 16:1–27
Introduction:
In Romans 16, Paul does something remarkable—he pauses his profound theological letter to name and honor people who had stood by him in ministry. He mentions Phoebe, a deaconess who had served faithfully; Priscilla and Aquila, co-workers who risked their lives for him; Mary, who worked hard for the church; and many others.
Look at Priscilla and Aquila—they even risked their lives for a man of God! Wow! No wonder some believers today go the extra mile to protect their pastors and spiritual leaders. If people do that today, it’s not new—Paul had many enemies, but God also released many faithful friends. Not everyone will stand with a man of God, but those who do are seen by God, honored by leaders, and often remembered in heaven and on earth.
We often think of ministry as just preaching and miracles—but Romans 16 shows us a different side. A side where names are remembered not for fame, but for faithfulness.
1. Faithful Helpers Are Remembered
“I commend to you our sister Phoebe…” (v. 1)
“Greet Priscilla and Aquila… they once risked their lives for me.” (vv. 3–4)
Paul pauses his epistle to personally commend men and women who were exceptional helpers in ministry. Phoebe, Priscilla and Aquila, Mary, Andronicus, Junia—real people, real stories, real sacrifice.
Reflection: Not everyone is remembered by name—but those who serve faithfully shine in the spirit. Church leaders can discern who genuinely carries the heart of the ministry. Will your name be mentioned with honor by your pastor or spiritual leaders?
As a pastor, I can boldly say—I’ve seen some individuals who have walked loyally and sacrificially with me. Spirit-filled women and deaconesses who God raised to stand with me in prayer, provision, and purity. These people, like those Paul mentioned, are not just good members—they are pillars in the Lord’s work.
2. Beware of Divisive and Rebellious Spirits
“Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith… Stay away from them.” (vv. 17–18)
While Paul honors the faithful, he also issues a sharp warning: avoid those who cause division and confusion in the body of Christ. These individuals often speak with smooth words, but their agenda is self-serving.
I’ve seen this. Someone once harshly criticized our ministry—claiming deep spiritual insight but later it was revealed that they were living in open sin, involved with multiple partners. It shocked me at first, but then I realized: when sin increases, rebellion follows. They begin attacking the very church that once covered them.
The Bible is clear: “Have nothing to do with them.” It doesn’t mean we hate them—but we distance ourselves to protect our faith.
3. Guard Your Mind, Protect Your Peace
“Be wise in doing right and stay innocent of any wrong.” (v. 19)
Some people carry spiritual weight that doesn’t belong to God. If you consistently feel heaviness, confusion, or negativity when around someone—pay attention. Any “friend” who draws you away from your assignment, makes you question your calling, or burdens your soul is not from God.
Seek counsel from your pastors. Be spiritually alert. And if needed—run. Don’t apologize for protecting your faith.
4. Final Encouragement: God Sees and Rewards
“The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” (v. 20)
Your labor is not in vain. Every risk, every offering, every prayer you’ve made for the work of God is seen. In the midst of warfare, confusion, or betrayal—God will give you victory.
Prayer
Lord, I want to be remembered as one who served You and Your Church with loyalty, faithfulness, and purity. Help me avoid divisive people and keep my heart focused on Your Kingdom. Make me a blessing to my pastors and leaders, and let my name carry spiritual weight for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Devotional Takeaway
It’s a great honor to be a helper in the ministry. God remembers. Leaders notice. Heaven celebrates. Let your name be counted among the faithful—not the divisive. Be a Priscilla. Be an Aquila. Be remembered.
