Rest in Christ, But Never Rest from Prayer

Scripture Reading: Revelation 12:14

“But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.”

Devotional Thought

Grace and peace to you in the wonderful name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Welcome to July, the seventh month of the year.

As I reflected on this new season, I began to wonder why our summer holidays often fall during the seventh month. It reminded me of the seventh day of creation, when God completed His work and rested.

Genesis 2:2–3 (NKJV)

“And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which God had created and made. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it…”

Throughout Scripture, the number seven represents completion, perfection, fulfillment and rest.

Perhaps this season is God’s gentle reminder for us to slow down, refresh ourselves, spend quality time with our families, and above all, find our rest in Jesus Christ.

Our Lord invites us:

Matthew 11:28–30 (NKJV)

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me… and you will find rest for your souls.”

My prayer is that every family experiences God’s peace this summer. May every home be filled with joy. May everyone travelling be preserved. May this season refresh your body, renew your mind and strengthen your spirit.

However…

Rest does not mean spiritual inactivity.

Rest does not mean:

• Stop praying.

• Stop attending church.

• Stop serving God.

• Stop attending Prayer Gym.

• Stop joining corporate prayer.

• Stop reading your Bible.

• Stop fellowshipping with believers.

• Stop watching over your spiritual life.

Physical rest is healthy.

Spiritual rest is found in Christ.

But spiritual laziness is dangerous.

Rest from work.

Rest from your routine.

Rest with your family.

But never rest from God.

The Devil Never Takes a Holiday

Our bodies may rest,

but our spirits must remain awake.

Why?

Because our adversary never rests.

1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

The devil does not take a summer holiday.

He continues to roam.

He continues to deceive.

He continues to tempt.

He continues to seek someone to devour.

Therefore Jesus commands us:

Matthew 26:41 (NKJV)

“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

WATCH THE GATES DAY AND NIGHT

The book of Nehemiah teaches us a powerful principle.

While rebuilding Jerusalem, God’s people understood that prayer and watchfulness must go together.

Nehemiah 4:9 (NKJV)

“Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night.”

Notice what they did:

They prayed.

They watched.

They guarded the gates.

Day and night.

Later Nehemiah instructed:

Nehemiah 7:3 (NKJV)

“Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot… appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house.”

The gates represented the city’s protection.

Today, every believer has gates that must be guarded.

Watch over:

• Your heart.

• Your mind.

• Your eyes.

• Your ears.

• Your mouth.

• Your marriage.

• Your children.

• Your home.

• Your church.

Prayer is what keeps the gates secure.

UNDERSTANDING THE SERPENT’S STRATEGY

One of the greatest lessons on spiritual warfare is found in Revelation 12.

Notice carefully that the dragon never stopped pursuing the woman. Every time one strategy failed, he changed tactics.

1. He attacked before the promise was born.

Revelation 12:4 (NKJV)

”…to devour her Child as soon as it was born.”

The enemy attacks purpose before it manifests.

He attacks vision before it becomes reality.

He attacks marriages before they flourish.

He attacks ministries before revival.

He attacks God’s people before they step into their calling.

1. God protected His purpose.

Revelation 12:5 (NKJV)

The Child was caught up to God.

What God ordains,

no devil can destroy.

2. The dragon pursued the woman.

Revelation 12:13 (NKJV)

“Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman…”

After failing to destroy the Child,

he redirected his attack toward the woman.

The enemy hates everyone carrying God’s purpose.

3. God covered the woman.

Revelation 12:14 (NKJV)

God gave her two wings of a great eagle.

He carried her.

He prepared a place for her.

He nourished her.

He protected her from the presence of the serpent.

This is our confidence this summer.

God’s covering is greater than Satan’s attacks.

4. The serpent changed strategy again.

Revelation 12:15 (NKJV)

“So the serpent spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman…”

When persecution failed,

he released a flood.

The flood represents:

• Fear.

• Anxiety.

• Distraction.

• Temptation.

• Discouragement.

• Busyness.

• Spiritual complacency.

Anything designed to pull us away from God.

But God intervened.

Revelation 12:16 (NKJV)

“But the earth helped the woman…”

God always has a prepared way of escape.

5. Finally, the dragon declared war against every believer.

Revelation 12:17 (NKJV)

“And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Church,

this is where we are today.

The enemy is still making war against God’s people.

That is why summer must become a season of spiritual alertness, not spiritual carelessness.

OUR WARFARE IS SPIRITUAL

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers…”

We do not fight people.

We fight spiritual battles.

And our greatest weapon remains prayer.

ACTIVATE CORPORATE INTERCESSION

As members of the City Church District and our Global Family, let us not allow holidays to weaken our prayer lives.

Instead, let this become a season of stronger corporate intercession.

Pray for your pastors.

Pray for your district leaders.

Pray for every local assembly.

Pray for every missionary.

Pray for every family.

Pray for those travelling.

Pray for revival.

Let every Prayer Gym…

Every Sunday service…

Every home fellowship…

Every prayer gathering…

Become an altar where God’s presence is experienced.

The enemy wants isolated believers.

God builds a praying Church.

WE SHALL OVERCOME

Paul reminds us:

2 Corinthians 4:8–9 (NKJV)

“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.”

The dragon may pursue us,

but he shall never prevail.

Then John declares our victory.

Revelation 12:11 (NKJV)

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…”

This Sunday, throughout the City Church District and our Global Family, we will gather around the Lord’s Table to partake of Holy Communion.

As we enter this summer season, we declare that we are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ.

The blood still speaks.

The blood still cleanses.

The blood still protects.

The blood still delivers.

The blood still gives victory.

As we receive Holy Communion together, let us remember that our victory is not based on our strength but on Christ’s finished work on the Cross.

A PASTORAL CHARGE FOR THE SUMMER

As you enter this summer season, I leave you with this charge.

1. Make your way to the House of God.

Do not allow holidays to disconnect you from worship.

Remain committed to Sunday services, Holy Communion, and the fellowship of believers.

Hebrews 10:24–25 (NKJV)

”…not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together… but exhorting one another…”

1. Make your way to your prayer altar.

Pray daily.

Watch over the gates of your life.

Guard your heart.

Guard your family.

Guard your church.

Keep your spiritual fire burning.

Luke 18:1 (NKJV)

”…men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”

2. Make your way into the harvest field.

Summer is a wonderful opportunity to preach Christ.

Share your testimony.

Invite someone to church.

Witness while travelling.

Let someone encounter Jesus through your life.

Matthew 28:19–20 (NKJV)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…”

3. Make your way back stronger.

Return refreshed.

Return full of faith.

Return with testimonies.

Return with greater passion for Christ.

May this summer strengthen your walk with God and not weaken it.

Today’s Declaration

This summer, I will find my rest in Jesus Christ, but I will never rest from prayer. I will watch and pray day and night. I will guard the gates of my heart, my home, my family, and my church. I will remain faithful to corporate worship, corporate prayer, and the fellowship of believers. Though the enemy roams like a roaring lion, he shall not prevail over me, because I am covered by the blood of Jesus Christ. My family is covered. My pastors and leaders are covered. Every traveller is covered. Every church is covered. The fire of God throughout the City Church District and our Global Family shall never be quenched. We are hard-pressed, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony. This is our season of divine rest, divine covering, watchfulness, and victory. In Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen.
