Theme: Impacting generations with Kingdom VALUES

Sub-theme: New Direction Scripture Reading: JUDGES 13

INTRODUCTION

Good morning, church, and Shalom!

Today we continue our journey through the Book of Judges with Judges chapter 13.

Before we begin, take about 15–20 minutes to read Judges 13 directly from your Bible, and then another 20 minutes to slowly go through this devotion. Do not rush it. Read prayerfully and allow the Word of God to speak to you. Remember, this is not simply about completing a daily devotion; we are building a relationship with God’s Word.

Church, we have journeyed through the difficult stories of Judges 10, 11 and 12. We have seen Israel’s repeated cycles, Jephthah’s story, the danger of unnecessary conflict, and the importance of how we respond when we feel overlooked. Now we come to the story of Samson.

This book is opening our eyes to so many lessons, so fasten your seatbelt, because there is still much for us to learn.

Ask someone during the day, “Have you done your devotion?” If the answer is no, tell them, “You are missing a lot!”

Church, consistency builds your spiritual life. You cannot read your Bible today, skip tomorrow and expect to develop a deep relationship with God’s Word. Stay with the Word.

AGAIN, ISRAEL DID EVIL

Judges 13:1 says:

“Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.”

— Judges 13:1 NKJV

Church, look at that word: “Again.” Israel had fallen into the same cycle repeatedly. They turned away from God, experienced oppression, and God raised a deliverer. This time, the Philistines oppressed them for forty years.

We should not look at Israel and simply condemn them, because without Christ, humanity also struggles with sin. We need Jesus every day.

But notice what God does in the middle of this old cycle: God begins something new.

GOD CAN BEGIN A NEW DIRECTION IN A FAMILY

The story moves from the nation to one family:

“Now there was a certain man from Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children.”

— Judges 13:2 NKJV

Manoah’s wife was barren, but God was about to do something extraordinary. The Angel of the LORD appeared to her and said:

“Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.”

— Judges 13:3 NKJV

God was bringing life where there had been barrenness. But notice that the angel did not only announce the birth; he gave instructions:

“Now therefore, please be careful not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean.”

— Judges 13:4 NKJV

Why? Because the child was to be a Nazirite to God from the womb. The child was to be set apart.

Church, this is important for our theme of Raising Godly Families. Sometimes we pray, “God, use my children,” but we also need to ask, “What kind of environment am I creating for the children God has entrusted to me?”

A CHILD WITH A GOD-GIVEN PURPOSE

The angel continued:

“For the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death. And he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”

— Judges 13:7, 5 NKJV

Before Samson was born, God had already spoken about his purpose. Every child is more than a biological addition to a family; a child is a life entrusted to parents by God.

That is why family discipleship matters.

Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says:

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart; you shall teach them diligently to your children…”

— Deuteronomy 6:6–7 NKJV

The church has a role. Children’s ministry has a role. Pastors have a role. But parents have a responsibility before God. What children repeatedly see, hear and experience at home can shape them deeply.

MANOAH ASKED FOR INSTRUCTION

When Manoah heard what had happened, he did not simply celebrate the promise. He prayed:

“O Lord, please let the Man of God whom You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born.”

— Judges 13:8 NKJV

Church, I love this. Manoah did not only want to know what the child would become; he wanted to know what they should do.

When the Angel returned, Manoah asked:

“Now let Your words come to pass! What will be the boy’s rule of life, and his work?”

— Judges 13:12 NKJV

What a question! “What will be his rule of life?”

Every calling requires a way of life. We can pray for our children’s future, education, careers and success, but we must also pray about their character, values, identity and relationship with God.

Our responsibility is not to force our children into our own dreams; it is to help them discover and follow God’s purpose for their lives.

Lord, teach us how to raise the children You have entrusted to us.

GOD’S PRESENCE AND GOD’S PURPOSE

Manoah offered the sacrifice to the LORD, and the Angel of the LORD ascended in the flame. Manoah was afraid, but his wife responded with faith:

“If the LORD had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things, nor would He have told us such things as these at this time.”

— Judges 13:23 NKJV

She understood that God was revealing His purpose, not planning their destruction.

Then the child was born:

“So the woman bore a son and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.”

— Judges 13:24 NKJV

And then:

“And the Spirit of the LORD began to move upon him at Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.”

— Judges 13:25 NKJV

Church, this is what we should desire for the next generation—not simply that our children become successful, educated or famous, but that they know God, walk with God and are guided by His Spirit.

NEW DIRECTION: CONSECRATION BEFORE ASSIGNMENT

Judges 13 is not only about the birth of Samson. It is about how God begins a new direction in a family by setting apart a generation for His purpose.

Israel was in another cycle, but God was already preparing a deliverer. Before Samson entered the battlefield, there were instructions concerning how he was to be set apart. Before assignment came consecration.

That should challenge every parent. We often ask, “What will my child become?” Manoah teaches us to ask another question: “Lord, what must we do to prepare this child for You?”

That means creating a home where prayer is normal, God’s Word is valued, character matters, and children are taught to recognize that their lives belong to God.

You may be raising today what God intends to use tomorrow.

A new direction in your family may begin with something simple: restoring family prayer, reading Scripture together, setting godly boundaries, or becoming more intentional about what influences your children. What we establish today can become part of the foundation God uses tomorrow.

CLOSING

Church, God can begin a new direction in the middle of an old cycle. Let Manoah’s prayer become ours: “Lord, teach us what we shall do for the children You have entrusted to us.”

May God help us raise a generation that knows Him, loves His Word and fulfils His purpose.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let us continue growing in the Word and impacting generations with kingdom values.

God bless you. Shalom.

What a breakfast woww ☕️🥞

While Israel kept falling back into the same sins, God already had a plan to rescue and deliver them again. God’s mercy towards humanity is truly incredible!👏🏽

Even when they sinned, He allowed them to go through a season of suffering, only to lead them back again onto the right path.

The birth of Samson also shows me that God can make the impossible possible. When Manoah and his wife thought there was no way, God showed them the opposite.

God brought life where there had been barrenness.

Something so beautiful!❤️ God rewrites stories. May we also be able to follow God’s instructions as faithfully as Manoah’s family did concerning their son Samson.

Thank you…

Today’s devotion was once again so powerful! 🔥

“Even before Samson was born, God had already spoken about his purpose.” – Rev. Joseph

This reminded me once again that there is no person for whom God does not have a plan. There is no person whom God has not given a purpose on this earth. No matter how small or insignificant someone’s life may appear in our eyes, God intentionally created every person with a purpose.

And this thought reminded me of something Pastor often says:

Every person we encounter out there is someone with a divine purpose. Unfortunately, many people have not discovered that purpose because they have not received the spiritual guidance needed to understand what God has…

What an insightful devotion.

It is interesting that the instruction the angel gave was not for the son but for the mother. In other words, the most important thing in bringing up children is for parents first to obey God and be what He wants them to be.

Lord let the prayer of Manoa be my prayer: Lord what should be the rule of life and the work for the children you have entrusted to me.
