INTRODUCTION
Good morning, church, and Shalom!
As we conclude our study of Judges, we continue reflecting on the lessons God has given us, including His faithfulness and mercy. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23), and we are called to declare His faithfulness from generation to generation (Psalm 89:1). Having received mercy from God, we must extend mercy to others (Matthew 18:21–35).
Today, we consider the importance of honour.
1. WHAT IS HONOUR?
Honour means giving recognition, value and respect according to a person’s position, responsibility or contribution. It is not merely spoken; it must come from the heart and be demonstrated through our actions.
We are called to honour God with all our hearts (Matthew 22:37), our possessions and the firstfruits of our increase:
“Honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase.” — Proverbs 3:9, NKJV.
Our giving, service and obedience should flow from love, gratitude and trust, not pressure or obligation, because “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Jesus warned that people can honour God with their lips while their hearts remain far from Him (Matthew 15:8). True honour is therefore revealed through obedience, stewardship, worship and service.
2. HONOUR GOD AND SERVE OTHERS
We honour God not only with our finances, but also with our time, gifts, talents and willingness to serve. God has given each person abilities to advance His purposes. We honour Him when we use those gifts faithfully, share the Gospel and build His Kingdom.
“Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” — Colossians 3:23, NKJV.
Honour must also shape our families. Children are commanded to honour their parents (Ephesians 6:1–3), while husbands and wives are called to love and respect one another (Ephesians 5:22–33). Such honour strengthens relationships, promotes peace and establishes godly values for the next generation.
3. HONOUR THOSE WHO LABOUR IN THE LORD
Scripture instructs us to honour spiritual leaders who faithfully preach and teach God’s Word:
“Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.” — 1 Timothy 5:17, NKJV.
Every believer has value, but spiritual leaders carry particular responsibilities. They pray, teach, counsel, carry people’s burdens and often serve through unseen personal sacrifices. We should therefore recognise their labour, encourage them, pray for them and treat them with respect.
“Recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:12–13, NKJV.
Honour does not mean leaders are perfect or beyond accountability. It means we acknowledge their God-given responsibility and address concerns in a respectful, godly manner.
4. DO NOT LET FAMILIARITY OR PRIDE DESTROY HONOUR
Jesus said:
“A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” — Matthew 13:57, NKJV.
Familiarity can cause us to overlook the grace, sacrifice and contribution of those closest to us. We must not celebrate secular success while neglecting the ministries and leaders who nourish us spiritually. Our support, attention and appreciation should reflect genuine honour.
Honouring others does not diminish us. It reveals humility and maturity. Pride makes us compete, but humility enables us to recognise God’s grace in others.
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18, NKJV.
5. MAKE HONOUR PRACTICAL
* Honour God through obedience, worship, giving, stewardship and service (Proverbs 3:9; Colossians 3:23).
* Honour your family through respect, love, care and godly conduct (Ephesians 6:1–3; Ephesians 5:33).
* Honour spiritual leaders through prayer, encouragement, appreciation, practical support and respectful communication (1 Timothy 5:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:12–13).
* Honour one another by recognising each person’s contribution without jealousy or competition (Romans 12:10).
* Use your gifts to serve God and advance His Kingdom (1 Peter 4:10).
Do not wait until someone has retired, moved away or passed on before expressing appreciation. If a leader has prayed for you, taught you, guided you or helped you grow, thank them today. Send a message, pray for them or bless them practically as God enables you.
CONCLUSION
Honour begins with God and extends to our families, spiritual leaders and one another. We cannot claim to honour God while disregarding His instructions about how to treat people.
Let us recover a culture of honour in our homes, churches and communities. Let us recognise God’s grace in others, appreciate faithful service and express gratitude while we have the opportunity.
Today, purpose in your heart to honour God and the people He has placed in your life. Do not allow pride, jealousy or familiarity to rob you of the blessing of honour.
May the Lord give us humble hearts that honour His Word and appreciate those who faithfully serve His purposes.
Let us continue growing in the Word and impacting generations with kingdom values.
Say a prayer and ask the lord to give you a heart that honors what He has given you freely. Amen
God bless you. Shalom.
