Sub-theme: New Direction Scripture Reading: JUDGES 14

INTRODUCTION

Good morning, church, and Shalom!

Today we continue our journey through the Book of Judges with chapter 14. Please take about 15–20 minutes to read Judges 14 directly from your Bible, followed by approximately 20 minutes for this devotion. Read prayerfully and allow the Word of God to examine your heart.

In Judges 13, we saw how God announced Samson’s birth and gave his parents instructions concerning his consecration. Samson was born with a God-given assignment, and the Spirit of the LORD began to move upon him. But in Judges 14, we begin to see a tension that runs throughout his life: God had a purpose for Samson, but Samson did not always make choices consistent with that purpose.

THE DANGER OF FOLLOWING YOUR DESIRES

Judges 14:1–3 tells us that Samson went to Timnah, saw a Philistine woman and returned to his parents demanding that they get her for him as a wife. His parents questioned his decision, asking whether there was a suitable woman among their own people. But Samson insisted:

“Get her for me, for she pleases me well.”

— Judges 14:3 NKJV

Church, look at Samson’s reasoning. He saw what he wanted, and because the woman pleased him, he wanted to marry her. His parents raised concerns, but Samson was determined to have his way.

Can you imagine asking a young person today, “So, you couldn’t find a woman in this church? In the whole of FCC, in the entire Christian community, you couldn’t find someone to marry?”

I am not saying that everyone must marry someone from FCC or even from the same congregation. However, there is wisdom in seeking a partner who shares your faith and spiritual values. Samson was attracted to a woman from a people who did not share Israel’s covenant faith and who were oppressing Israel. Deuteronomy 7:3–4 warns God’s people against marriages that would turn their hearts away from the LORD. The principle is clear: our relationships must not draw us away from God.

You do not marry based on chemistry alone; you marry based on spiritual compatibility, character and shared values. Chemistry may attract you to someone, but it cannot sustain a godly marriage on its own. Sometimes young people are driven by passion, ignore godly counsel and pursue relationships simply because someone makes them feel good. Yet feelings alone cannot tell you whether a person is right for your future.

Parents and spiritual leaders have an important role in helping young people examine character, faith and the long-term implications of their decisions. That does not mean parents make every decision for their adult children, but godly counsel should not be dismissed simply because it challenges our desires.

We do not marry simply because someone pleases us. A person can make you feel good today and still lead you into difficulties tomorrow. For further guidance on evaluating a potential spouse, check out my book, How to Find Out If He or She’s the Right Person.

GOD’S PURPOSE DOES NOT EXCUSE OUR WRONG CHOICES

Judges 14:4 says that Samson’s parents did not know that this situation was being used by the LORD to create an opportunity against the Philistines, who were ruling over Israel. This is important, but we must understand it correctly. God was working to advance His purpose, yet that does not mean every decision Samson made was wise or that this was the only way God could have acted.

God can work through imperfect people without endorsing every choice they make. We see a similar principle in Genesis 50:20, where Joseph explains that although his brothers intended evil against him, God intended it for good.

Church, never use God’s sovereignty as an excuse for disobedience. It is better to obey God willingly than to require Him to work through the consequences of our mistakes.

DO NOT DEVELOP AN INDEPENDENT SPIRIT

On his journey to Timnah, Samson encountered a young lion. Judges 14:6 says:

“And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand.”

— Judges 14:6 NKJV

Church, notice that the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon Samson. His extraordinary strength was connected to God’s empowerment. Yet as we continue reading, we see a gifted young man who increasingly wanted to do things his own way, even when his parents raised concerns.

Samson’s story challenges us to examine what I call an independent spirit. An independent spirit is an attitude in which a person resists instruction, struggles to accept assignments, rejects correction and prefers to operate according to personal preferences rather than follow godly leadership and direction.

You can be gifted and still struggle with submission. You can have great potential and yet be unwilling to receive instructions. You may even have a genuine calling from God, but if you continually insist on doing things your own way, you can create unnecessary problems for yourself and others.

Church, being gifted does not give us permission to become unteachable. In the family, at church and in ministry, we must learn to receive instruction, honour legitimate leadership and fulfil the responsibilities entrusted to us. Even when we have ideas of our own, humility requires us to listen, seek counsel and work within godly order.

Samson had a divine assignment, but his personal desires increasingly influenced his decisions. We must not allow our gifts or calling to make us resistant to correction.

A new direction requires not only spiritual gifting, but also a teachable spirit, a willingness to accept responsibility and the humility to follow godly instruction.

DO NOT IGNORE GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS

Judges 14:8–9 tells us that Samson later returned to see the lion’s carcass. He found a swarm of bees and honey inside it, scraped out the honey and ate it. He also gave some to his parents without telling them where he had obtained it.

Remember, Samson had been set apart as a Nazirite from the womb. Numbers 6:6 instructs a Nazirite not to go near a dead body. Yet Samson handled the lion’s carcass to obtain the honey. The text does not tell us everything Samson understood about his consecration at that moment, but his action raises an important question about obedience.

What is the value of having a calling if we disregard the instructions that come with it?

Church, we cannot live anyhow simply because our friends are doing the same thing or because a particular choice appears harmless. We all have different responsibilities and assignments, and we must take God’s instructions seriously. We must not use the behaviour of friends or fellow Christians as our ultimate standard; God’s Word must guide us.

Parents, this is part of raising godly families. We must teach our children that obedience is not merely about avoiding punishment. It is about honouring God, even when nobody is watching and when disobedience appears to offer an immediate benefit.

Do not exchange your spiritual convictions for temporary pleasure.

WHEN WE LACK WISDOM, OUR CHOICES CAN CREATE TROUBLE

Samson organised a wedding feast and presented the Philistines with a riddle. He offered thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing to those who could solve it. What might have appeared to be an entertaining challenge became an unnecessary source of conflict.

When the men could not solve the riddle, they threatened Samson’s bride and pressured her to obtain the answer from him. She wept and repeatedly pressed Samson until he disclosed it. She then revealed the answer to the men.

Judges 14:18 records Samson’s response:

“And he said to them: ‘If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle!’”

— Judges 14:18 NKJV

Church, Samson’s decision to create the challenge, combined with the pressure and manipulation surrounding it, resulted in anger and violence. Not everything we can do is necessary, and not every challenge is worth creating. Wisdom means knowing when to speak, when to remain silent, when to proceed and when to walk away.

There was already a spiritual concern about this relationship. Now another warning sign was emerging: Samson’s bride yielded to pressure from her people and disclosed what he had entrusted to her. We must not judge every relationship by one difficult moment, but we should never ignore patterns of dishonesty, manipulation, coercion or betrayal.

Young people, when considering marriage, pay attention to how a person handles pressure, disagreement, confidentiality and loyalty. Do not only ask, “Do I love this person?” Also ask, “Can we build a relationship founded on truth, faithfulness and mutual respect?”

Love without wisdom can leave you vulnerable to consequences you never anticipated.

WHEN WRONG CHOICES BRING PAINFUL CONSEQUENCES

Judges 14 ends with a painful development:

“But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man.”

— Judges 14:20 NKJV

Imagine discovering that the woman you intended to marry had been given to your own companion, the man who stood beside you at the wedding. The relationship that began with Samson insisting, “She pleases me well,” ended with him losing her to someone who had been part of the wedding celebration.

This was a deeply painful outcome. It also shows how complicated the situation had become. Samson’s choices, the Philistines’ manipulation and the actions of those around him all contributed to the conflict.

We should remember that God was working through the situation to create an opportunity against the Philistines. But God’s ability to use a situation does not mean every decision within it was wise or righteous. God could have used other means to advance His purpose; His sovereignty does not excuse Samson’s poor judgement.

Church, do not wait until a relationship becomes painful before asking the questions you should have asked at the beginning. Seek God’s wisdom before making life-changing decisions, and take the time to examine whether a relationship aligns with your faith, values and calling.

NEW DIRECTION: LET YOUR CHARACTER MATCH YOUR CALLING

Judges 14 reveals the tension between Samson’s extraordinary gifting and his lack of discernment in important areas of his life. He was empowered by the Spirit of the LORD, yet his decisions concerning relationships, obedience and conflict exposed serious weaknesses.

For our young people, the lesson is clear: do not allow your feelings to make decisions that your faith and wisdom should guide. Seek godly counsel, examine spiritual compatibility and take warning signs seriously. For parents, our responsibility is to raise children who understand that their choices have consequences and who learn to respect God’s Word rather than simply follow their passions.

A God-given gift is not a substitute for godly character. We need the Holy Spirit not only to empower us for service, but also to help us live with wisdom, integrity and self-control.

A new direction begins when we stop allowing our desires to lead us and begin allowing God’s Word to guide us.

CLOSING

Church, a God-given calling must be matched by godly character and wise decisions. May the Lord give us discernment in our relationships and wisdom to raise a generation that honours Him in both its gifts and its conduct.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let us continue growing in the Word and impacting generations with kingdom values.

God bless you. Shalom.

What really stood out to me from today's devotion is that Samson had the strength to tear apart a lion, but struggled to control his own desires. He was empowered by the Spirit of God to overcome something physically stronger than himself but still was vulnerable to the desires of his own heart. This made me realise that being strong in one area of our lives does not automatically mean we are strong in every area. We can be gifted, spiritually active, committed to serving God, and still have areas of our character that need serious attention. Samson insisted on what pleased him, despite the concerns by his parents. It made me think about how easily we can confuse what…

Our gifts should not make us prideful or become an independent person. Our gifts are from God, and it should never come to a point where we trust in our giftings more than God or wise counsel.

„It is better to obey God willingly than to require Him to work through the consequences of our mistakes.“

Of course, God will make a way, but there are consequences of having an independent spirit. Not following wise counsel can be the start of our own destruction.

Counsel is not there to control you, brainwash you, etc., but to protect and discipline you.

What I have been reminded of again is:

Wisdom is key. Without using wisdom, you'll create so many unnecessary problems…
