Daily Bible Devotion - Revelation 12:1–17

23. June 2026

Devotion by Reverend Joseph Antwi

Theme: Living in Anticipation of the Return of Jesus Christ Our Messiah

The Woman, the Dragon, and the Victory of the Saints

Scripture Reading:

  • Revelation 12:1–17

Hello Church!

As we continue our journey through the Book of Revelation, we arrive at one of the most symbolic and important chapters in the entire book. Revelation 12 pulls back the curtain and allows us to see a great spiritual conflict that has been taking place behind the scenes throughout history.

Many of the events we see on earth have a spiritual reality behind them. In this chapter, John is shown a woman, a child, and a dragon. While the imagery is symbolic, the message is clear: Satan has always opposed God’s plans, God’s people, and God’s Messiah. Yet despite all his efforts, he cannot stop what God has ordained.

This chapter reminds us that our struggles are not merely physical. There is a spiritual battle taking place, but it is also a chapter filled with hope because it reveals the certainty of Christ’s victory and the triumph of God’s people.

Let us walk through this chapter together.

1. The Woman and the Child

Revelation 12:1–6

John begins by describing a great sign in heaven:

“A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars.”

The woman is pregnant and crying out in labor and in pain to give birth.

Church, anyone who has witnessed childbirth knows that labor pains are real. There is crying, travail, and intense pressure before new life emerges. Throughout Scripture, birth pains often symbolize suffering before the fulfillment of God’s purposes.

The woman is generally understood to represent Israel, God’s covenant people, through whom the Messiah would come. The twelve stars remind us of the twelve tribes of Israel and God’s covenant promises.

Then John sees another sign:

“A great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.”

The dragon is later identified as Satan himself.

The imagery of the seven heads and ten horns is important. Similar language appears in the book of Daniel and later in Revelation. Many Bible scholars understand the heads and horns to symbolize kingdoms, rulers, kings, or political powers through which Satan seeks to influence the nations. The exact interpretation is debated, but the picture is clear: the dragon possesses significant authority and influence within the world system.

John then tells us:

“His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth.”

This is fascinating because throughout Revelation, stars are sometimes used symbolically for angels. Earlier in Revelation, Christ held the stars in His hand, representing angels connected to the churches.

Some scholars therefore believe this may refer to Satan’s rebellion and the angels who followed him. While Scripture does not explain every detail, it is possible that the dragon’s sweeping of a third of the stars points to fallen angels who joined Satan’s rebellion. One thing is certain: Satan’s influence extends beyond the physical realm into the spiritual realm.

The dragon stands before the woman, waiting to devour her child as soon as He is born.

Church, notice the dragon’s mission. He is not merely attacking the woman; he is trying to destroy the child.

Throughout history, Satan has sought to destroy God’s redemptive plan. We see this in Pharaoh’s attempt to kill Hebrew boys. We see it in Herod’s slaughter of infants in Bethlehem. Again and again, the enemy attempts to destroy what God is bringing forth.

In many ways, this still happens today. The enemy often attacks people who carry great purpose and destiny. He seeks to distort lives through sin, addiction, deception, hopelessness, and brokenness. Many lives with tremendous potential have been targeted before their God-given purpose could fully emerge.

Yet the dragon failed.

The child is born and is described as:

“A male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron.”

This clearly points to Jesus Christ.

God protects the child, and He is caught up to God and His throne. The dragon could not stop God’s plan.

Church, whenever God has ordained something, no power of darkness can ultimately prevent it.

Reflection Question: Am I trusting God’s sovereignty even when opposition arises?

Life Application: Remember that God’s plans for your life cannot be overturned by the enemy when you remain in Christ.

2. War in Heaven

Revelation 12:7–12

The scene now shifts dramatically.

John sees war in heaven.

“Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought.”

Notice something remarkable. The dragon is not alone. He has angels fighting alongside him.

These angels were originally created by God, yet they followed Satan in rebellion and deception. This reminds us how powerful deception can be.

The battle intensifies, but the dragon does not prevail.

“Nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.”

Church, this is powerful.

The dragon loses his place.

He loses his position.

He loses his standing.

There was no longer room for him in heaven.

Revelation gives us a glimpse into a spiritual reality: before many things happen physically, battles are already taking place spiritually. What John sees reminds us that our warfare is not merely against flesh and blood.

This is why prayer remains so important. Spiritual battles are won through God’s power, not merely through human effort.

The dragon is identified clearly:

“That serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world.”

Notice Satan’s primary weapon: deception.

His greatest strategy is not always persecution or violence. It is deception. He seeks to distort truth, confuse people, and draw them away from God.

After the dragon is cast down, heaven erupts in celebration:

“Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come.”

Then we encounter one of the most powerful verses in Revelation:

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

Church, never underestimate the power of your testimony.

The blood of Jesus gives us victory, but our testimony declares that victory. This is why it is important to tell others what God has done in your life. Testimonies strengthen believers, encourage faith, and glorify Christ.

The saints overcame because they trusted Christ completely.

The blood purchased their victory.

Their testimony proclaimed that victory.

Their faithfulness demonstrated that victory.

Even when facing death, they remained loyal to Christ.

Therefore heaven rejoices.

But the earth is warned.

The devil has been cast down, and he knows his time is short.

Reflection Question: Am I relying on Christ’s victory or my own strength?

Life Application: Daily remind yourself that your victory comes through the blood of Jesus and the truth of His Word.

3. The Dragon’s War Against God’s People

Revelation 12:13–17

After being cast out of heaven, the dragon turns his attention toward the woman.

Unable to destroy Christ, Satan persecutes the woman who gave birth to the male Child.

Church, throughout Scripture we see the enemy’s hostility toward God’s covenant people. Yet we also see God’s protection.

The woman is given two wings of a great eagle and is carried to a place prepared by God. This symbolizes divine protection and provision.

The serpent then spews water like a flood after the woman, attempting to overwhelm her. Whether symbolic of persecution, deception, armies, or overwhelming attacks, the message is clear: Satan continues his efforts to destroy God’s people.

Yet once again God intervenes.

The earth helps the woman by swallowing the flood.

What the enemy intended for destruction, God turns into deliverance.

Unable to destroy the woman, the dragon becomes enraged and goes to make war against the rest of her offspring:

“Those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Church, this includes us.

The spiritual battle did not end in Revelation 12.

The enemy still opposes prayer.

He still opposes holiness.

He still opposes evangelism.

He still opposes the Church.

The dragon is still making war against those who belong to Jesus Christ.

But he remains a defeated enemy.

The same chapter that shows us the dragon also shows us his defeat. The same chapter that reveals the battle also reveals the victory.

Church, let us remain watchful and prayerful. Let us continue to seek God, stand upon His Word, and remain faithful in our witness.

As we pray and fast, let us remember that our greatest battles are won first in the spiritual realm. The enemy may fight, but he cannot overcome those who belong to Christ.

Jesus has already secured the victory.

Reflection Question: Am I standing firm in my faith despite spiritual opposition?

Life Application: Do not be discouraged by spiritual battles. Stand firm, knowing that Christ has already secured the victory.

Reflection

Revelation 12 reveals the spiritual battle that has been taking place throughout history. Satan has opposed God’s plans, attacked God’s people, and sought to destroy God’s Messiah. Yet every attempt has failed.

The child was born.

The Messiah completed His mission.

The dragon was defeated.

The saints overcome.

And God’s Kingdom continues to advance.

One of the greatest lessons from this chapter is that believers are not fighting for victory; we are fighting from victory. Jesus Christ has already won the decisive battle through His death, resurrection, and ascension.

As we live in anticipation of the return of Jesus Christ our Messiah, let us remain faithful, courageous, prayerful, and confident in His victory.

Remember:

“They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

Prayer Points

1. Thank God for the victory that we have through Jesus Christ and His precious blood.

2. Pray that the Lord will help you remain faithful during times of spiritual warfare and opposition.

3. Ask God to strengthen your testimony so that your life continually points others to Christ.

4. Pray for discernment and protection from deception, knowing that Satan’s primary weapon is to deceive.

5. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you stand firm in obedience to God’s Word.

6. Pray that every attack against God’s purpose for your life, family, and destiny will fail in Jesus’ name.

7. Pray for Fortified City Church, Love City Church, and the global Church to remain strong, victorious, and effective in advancing God’s Kingdom.

8. As we continue in prayer and fasting, ask God to strengthen His people and help us remain steadfast in spiritual warfare until Christ returns.

Shalom,

Rev. Joseph Antwi

When I read the devotion I was really impressed by how, several times the enemy has tried to prevent Gods plans from happening but in the end he failed and lost all the power

whenever God has ordained something, no power of darkness can ultimately prevent it

The devotion revealed that warfare starts in the spiritual realm rather than physical. I think this may be the reason why some people keep fighting the same battles over and over again because they rely themselves on their strength alone but as Pastor says spiritual battles are won through God’s powerand his Word is our weapon.

But what really stood out to me is verse 11 “And they overcame him by the blood…

Hier ist eine natürliche und flüssige englische Übersetzung:

Revelation 12 is such a powerful chapter to me.

I love how this chapter reveals the honest reality that there are spiritual battles, but also mental and emotional battles. It makes it clear that the enemy tried everything to destroy God’s great plan. Yet the devil could not stop God’s plan. That reminds me of who we are in Christ: we stand on the side of victory. 🔥🔥🙌🏿

The devotional also showed that the greatest battle has already been won. Even so, there are still battles we have to face. The difference is that we don’t fight them in our own strength. Through Jesus’ victory, we have been given authority. With God’s…

Wow Today’s devotion was truly such a blessing!

“We do not fight for victory; we fight from victory.” WOW.

How blessed are we to already have the victory! This devotion taught me that I do not fight to obtain victory, but from a place of victory. So I keep my head up, my prayers up, and my gratitude up, because if something is in God’s will, He has already made a way.

I also learned that we should always live with the understanding that the enemy has already been defeated - HE CANNOT WIN BECAUSE HE HAS ALREADY LOST. That is why we share testimonies and give thanks: they strengthen our faith and remind us that Christ has already won the…

We give God all the praise for such a wonderful and timely Word. 🔥🔥🔥

I learned through today’s devotion that Satan’s „greatest strategy is not always persecution or violence. It is deception. He seeks to distort the truth, confuse people, and draw them away from God.“ Thank you, Pastor, for drawing our attention to the enemy’s greatest weapon and making us aware of our victory through Christ.

While pondering this Word, I truly understood why Apostle Paul and Apostle John continually emphasized in their epistles the need to hold firmly to the deep truths of the faith. It is the truth that makes us aware of the enemy’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11). As the Scriptures say, “And you shall know…

Revelation is a refreshing book!

This chapter truly reveals what Paul was saying in Ephesians 6:12. We are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against evil rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places.

BUT the fight has already been won!

As Pastor once said, we are just mimicking what has already happened in the spiritual realms! Knowing that the victory has already been secured in heaven gives us confidence that every battle we face on earth will also be won according to God's will.

WOW! We are not fighting for victory—we are fighting from victory.

People of God, let us keep trusting, keep praying, and keep reminding the enemy that he…
