Devotion by Reverend Joseph Antwi

Theme:  Living in Anticipation of the Return of Jesus Christ Our Messiah

The Throne Room of Heaven and the Worthy Lamb

Scripture Reading:

  • Revelation 4:1-11

Hello, Church!

Welcome once again to our journey through the book of Revelation.

I wish you could see the smile on my face whilst putting this devotion together. I am so grateful to God for the tools He has given us to make research easier and to help us produce these devotions. I do not take all the credit for writing these devotions myself. I am grateful for the various tools that help me pull together information and insights, whether through books, study resources, the internet, or modern technology that helps retrieve information and make research more accessible.

I thank God for these resources because they help me prepare these devotions more effectively as we journey together through Scripture. In years gone by, I might have spent five or more hours preparing a devotion like this. Today, depending on the topic, it may take two or three hours, but my heart remains the same: to bring you God’s Word faithfully.

Please continue to pray for me. Pray that whatever I share with you is truly what God wants you to hear and read. Pray that I remain sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and that these devotions continue to bless and strengthen your walk with Christ.

Church, I am particularly excited about what we discover in Revelation chapters 4 and 5. As I studied these chapters, many things began to stand out to me, and I believe they will bless you as well.

As we continue our study of the return of Jesus Christ, we now arrive at one of the most important, powerful, and awe-inspiring portions of Scripture.

Up until now, Jesus has been addressing the churches. He has been examining their condition, correcting them, encouraging them, and preparing them for His return.

But beginning in Revelation chapter 4, the scene suddenly changes.

John is no longer looking at the church on earth.

John is now invited into heaven itself.

Oh church, I pray that we get this experience.

I do not know about you, but I look forward to the day when we will see the realities of heaven with our own eyes. As strange as these visions may sound while reading them, imagine what John must have felt while experiencing them. I am sure there was awe. I am sure there was wonder. I am sure there was holy fear.

Normally, people die before seeing these realities.

Yet John was alive.

He was caught up in the Spirit and granted access into heaven itself.

What an incredible privilege.

Church, before we continue, I know many of you have already read these chapters, but I want to encourage you once again to carefully open your Bible and read:

  • Revelation 4:1–11

  • Revelation 5:1–14

Read slowly.

Read prayerfully.

Underline every description of God.

Underline every description of the throne.

Underline every description of worship.

Underline every description of the Lamb.

Pay attention to who is worshipped in heaven and why they are worshipped.

These devotions may be slightly longer than usual, but I believe you will enjoy them. Read them in the morning. Read them again in the evening. Revisit them at night. I will also be reading and meditating on these chapters alongside you.

Now let us enter the throne room together.

1. A Door Opened in Heaven

(Revelation 4:1)

John writes:

“After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven.”

What a remarkable invitation.

After examining the condition of the churches, God now allows John to see heaven’s perspective.

Church, whenever we focus only on earthly events, we can become discouraged. We see wars, political instability, economic challenges, suffering, and confusion. But heaven sees differently.

The first thing John notices is not chaos.

The first thing John notices is a throne.

This reminds us that while the earth may be shaking, heaven is not in panic. God remains in control.

Takeaway: Whenever fear tries to overwhelm you, remember that the throne is occupied.

2. The Throne Is Occupied

(Revelation 4:2–3)

John writes:

“And behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.”

Church, this may be one of the most comforting truths in all of Scripture.

The throne is occupied. God has not lost control. God is not surprised by world events. God is not reacting to history. He is directing history.

Before God reveals the future to John, He first reveals who controls the future.

As believers waiting for the return of Christ, our confidence is not in governments, economies, or world systems. Our confidence is in the One seated upon the throne.

Takeaway: Whenever fear tries to overwhelm you, remember that the throne is occupied and God remains in control.

3. The Four Living Creatures Around the Throne

(Revelation 4:6–8)

One of the most fascinating parts of this chapter is the appearance of the four living creatures.

John says:

“The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle.” (Revelation 4:7)

Church, many believers have wondered who these creatures are, but understand that this is not the first time they have appeared in Scripture. When we compare Revelation with Ezekiel and Isaiah, we discover remarkable similarities. It is very likely that these prophets were seeing the same heavenly realities from different perspectives.

Ezekiel’s Vision

In Ezekiel 1:10, each living creature possessed four faces:

* Lion

* Ox

* Man

* Eagle

Later Ezekiel writes:

“I knew they were cherubim.” (Ezekiel 10:20)

Cherubim are a special class of heavenly beings associated with the throne, glory, and holiness of God. We first encounter them in Genesis 3:24 where they guard the way to the Tree of Life after Adam and Eve are expelled from the Garden. They also appear above the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus 25:18–22.

These are not ordinary angels. They are heavenly attendants who stand close to the presence and glory of God.

Isaiah’s Vision

Isaiah saw another group of heavenly beings.

“Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings.” (Isaiah 6:2)

The word seraphim means “burning ones.” Their ministry is closely connected to worship, holiness, and proclaiming the glory of God.

They continually cried:

“Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts.” (Isaiah 6:3)

John’s Vision

In Revelation 4:8, the four living creatures also have six wings and continually cry:

“Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”

This is why many theologians believe John’s vision contains characteristics found in both Ezekiel’s cherubim and Isaiah’s seraphim. Whether they are cherubim, seraphim, or a unique order of heavenly beings, one thing is certain: they occupy an extremely high-ranking position around the throne of God.

What Do The Four Faces Represent?

Many theologians believe the faces represent the highest forms of God’s creation:

* Lion — the king of wild animals.

* Ox — the strongest among domesticated animals.

* Man — the highest of earthly creation.

* Eagle — the ruler of the skies.

Others see them as reflecting aspects of God’s character and rule:

* Lion — Majesty and Kingship.

* Ox — Service and Strength.

* Man — Wisdom and Relationship.

* Eagle — Vision and Heavenly Authority.

Church, I also find it fascinating that many servants of God throughout history have seen lessons in these four faces.

Sometimes a leader must have the face of a lion. There are moments when authority must be exercised against darkness, sickness, demons, principalities, and powers. There are moments when correction and courage are needed.

At other times, a servant of God must have the face of an ox. Ministry requires service, sacrifice, endurance, and strength.

There are also moments when a leader must have the face of a man. We are human beings. We must relate to people with compassion, understanding, wisdom, and grace.

Then there is the face of an eagle. A servant of God must be visionary, able to see beyond present circumstances. Eagles soar above storms rather than being destroyed by them.

Interestingly, we see all these characteristics perfectly displayed in Jesus Christ.

* He came as a servant.

* He came as a man.

* He demonstrated kingly authority.

* He saw beyond earthly limitations.

Together these faces ultimately point us back to Him.

I also personally connect these four creatures with the four directions of the earth: north, south, east, and west. Throughout Scripture, the number four often symbolizes universality. We see the four winds, the four corners of the earth, and the four directions. These creatures may therefore symbolize God’s universal authority over all creation.

One thing is certain: everything around God’s throne points back to His glory.

Why Are They Covered With Eyes?

John says:

“They were full of eyes around and within.” (Revelation 4:8)

Ezekiel also observed the same thing.

The eyes symbolize:

* Awareness

* Vigilance

* Heavenly perception

* Complete observation

Nothing escapes God’s attention. Nothing is hidden from heaven.

These creatures continually observe and worship the holiness of God.

Church, this is one of the most comforting truths in all of Scripture.

If somebody lies about you, God sees.

If somebody speaks evil against you, God sees.

If somebody betrays you, God sees.

If somebody mistreats you, God sees.

As a pastor, I have learned that ministry introduces you to all kinds of people. By the grace of God, I have wonderful sons and daughters in the faith, faithful people who genuinely love God. But no pastor on earth leads a church where everyone has pure motives.

Yet I have learned something important:

God sees what I cannot see.

God sees the heart.

God sees motives.

God sees intentions.

That is why Jesus says:

“I am He who searches the minds and hearts.” (Revelation 2:23)

Church, do not spend your energy trying to expose everyone. Leave judgment to God.

He sees our struggles.

He sees our faithfulness.

He sees our sacrifices.

He sees our tears.

He sees our worship.

Whether you are married or single, He sees.

Whether you are struggling privately, He sees.

Whether you are faithful when nobody is watching, He sees.

Nothing escapes His attention.

Therefore keep trusting Him.

Keep worshipping Him.

Keep following Him.

The righteous Judge sees everything and will judge rightly at the proper time.

4. Worship Never Stops in Heaven

(Revelation 4:8–11)

Day and night the living creatures declare:

“Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty.”

The twenty-four elders then cast their crowns before the throne.

Church, heaven is centered on worship.

The culture of heaven is worship.

The atmosphere of heaven is worship.

The activity of heaven is worship.

This teaches us that worship is much more than singing songs.

Worship is recognizing God’s worth.

Worship is responding to His greatness.

Worship is surrendering our lives before Him.

Notice something beautiful in Revelation 4:9–10. Whenever the four living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, the twenty-four elders immediately fall down before Him.

These elders have crowns.

They have thrones.

They have honor.

Yet they cast everything before God.

Church, they cast down their crowns.

Today we might say:

* They cast down their titles.

* They cast down their achievements.

* They cast down their positions.

* They cast down their accomplishments.

Whether prophet, apostle, pastor, elder, worship leader, businessman, manager, ambassador, or president, heaven teaches us that every crown must eventually be laid before God.

The elders proclaim:

“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power.” (Revelation 4:11)

Because He created all things.
