Devotion by Reverend Joseph Antwi
Theme: Living in Anticipation of the Return of Jesus Christ Our Messiah

The Throne Room of Heaven and the Worthy Lamb
Scripture Reading:
Revelation 5:1-14
Church, before we begin today’s devotion, I want to encourage you to carefully open your Bible and read Revelation 5:1–14. Please don’t rush through it. Read it slowly and prayerfully. Underline verses that stand out to you. Circle words that speak to your heart. Make observations. Ask questions. Let the Holy Spirit speak to you directly through the Scripture
One thing I have learned over the years is that a devotion can inspire you, but your Bible will transform you. The goal of these devotions is not to replace your Bible reading but to encourage you to open your Bible even more. So before you continue, take a few moments and read Revelation chapter 5 from beginning to end.
⸻
Hello Church!
Welcome once again to our journey through the book of Revelation.
I pray you were blessed by yesterday’s devotion as we entered the throne room of heaven and saw one of the most breathtaking scenes in all of Scripture. We saw the throne of God, the twenty-four elders, the four living creatures, and continuous worship taking place before the throne. Today the scene continues, but now our attention shifts from the throne to the One who is worthy.
Church, I have to confess that every time I read this book, I am reminded that everything in heaven revolves around Jesus. The angels know it. The elders know it. The living creatures know it. Heaven knows it. The question is, do we know it?
As I was studying this chapter, another thought came strongly into my heart. Have you ever noticed that not everybody who saw heavenly things was permitted to reveal what they saw? The Apostle Paul tells us that he was caught up into the third heaven:
“I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven.” (2 Corinthians 12:2)
He goes on to say:
“He heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.” (2 Corinthians 12:4)
Paul saw things that he was not allowed to share. Yet when we come to John, we see something very different. John is also caught up in the Spirit and sees heavenly realities, but repeatedly the Lord tells him:
“What you see, write in a book.” (Revelation 1:11)
And again:
“Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.” (Revelation 1:19)
Church, this is very important. The Book of Revelation is not merely John’s personal experience. It is a revelation God intended His Church to know. God wanted us to know what heaven looks like. He wanted us to understand the condition of the churches. He wanted us to understand the worthiness of Christ. He wanted us to understand the events surrounding His return. Most importantly, He wanted us to know who Jesus really is.
Now, this does not mean John saw everything. Later, when the seven thunders spoke, John was about to write what he heard, but heaven stopped him:
“Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them.” (Revelation 10:4)
So even John was not permitted to reveal every mystery. Church, there are still secrets that belong to God. As Moses reminds us:
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever.” (Deuteronomy 29:29)
Instead of becoming overly concerned about what God has hidden, let us focus on what He has revealed. And what He reveals in Revelation chapter 5 is one of the greatest truths in all Scripture: Jesus Christ alone is worthy.
Now let’s walk through this chapter together.
⸻
1. The Scroll in the Hand of God (Revelation 5:1)
John writes:
“And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals.”
Church, notice that the scroll is in the right hand of God. The right hand throughout Scripture often represents authority, power, ownership, government, and dominion. Many Bible scholars believe this scroll contains God’s plans, God’s judgments, God’s purposes, and the events that must unfold before Christ establishes His Kingdom. Yet there is a problem: the scroll is sealed and the future is locked until someone worthy is found to open it.
Isn’t life sometimes like that? There are moments when we wish we could see tomorrow. We wish we knew how things would work out. We wish we knew how God was going to answer our prayers. But the future belongs to God, and the good news is that even when we do not know the future, the One holding the future sits upon the throne.
⸻
2. No One Was Found Worthy (Revelation 5:2–4)
A mighty angel cries out:
“Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?”
Notice that he cries with a loud voice. This was not a quiet announcement. This question echoed throughout heaven, and then comes one of the most shocking statements in all of Scripture:
“And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll.” (Revelation 5:3)
Church, think about that for a moment. The twenty-four elders were there. The four living creatures were there. Countless angels were there. Yet nobody was worthy. Nobody had the authority. Nobody had the qualification. Nobody had paid the price.
This challenges me personally. Sometimes in ministry we want authority without sacrifice. We want influence without faithfulness. We want crowns without crosses. We want recognition without suffering. We want the reward without the process. But heaven teaches us that authority is connected to sacrifice. Even the elders could not open the scroll. Even the angels could not open the scroll because none of them had paid the price.
Church, let me encourage somebody today. Don’t give up when serving God becomes difficult. Don’t quit because people misunderstand you. Don’t stop serving because someone failed to appreciate your efforts. The Lord sees every sacrifice, every prayer, every tear, every act of faithfulness. John begins to weep because nobody is found worthy, but one of the elders already knows the answer. I love this because the elder does not point to himself; he points to Jesus. Every true leader, every true elder, every true pastor ultimately points people to Jesus.
⸻
3. The Lion of the Tribe of Judah Has Prevailed (Revelation 5:5)
The elder says:
“Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed.”
Church, what a statement! The Lion has prevailed. Jesus has prevailed over sin, death, hell, Satan, and the grave. The title Lion of the Tribe of Judah points us back to Genesis 49:9–10 and speaks of His kingship, authority, and dominion. The title Root of David points us to Isaiah 11:1–10 and reveals Him as the promised Messiah and eternal King.
Before heaven opens the scroll, heaven reminds us of something important: Jesus has already won. I don’t know what battle you are facing today. I don’t know what report you have received. I don’t know what challenge is standing before you. But I do know this—the Lion has prevailed, and because He has prevailed, we can stand in confidence and hope.
⸻
4. The Lamb in the Midst of the Throne (Revelation 5:6–7)
Then John looks, and what he sees surprises him. He heard about a Lion, but he sees a Lamb:
“A Lamb as though it had been slain.”
Church, this is one of the most beautiful pictures in the Bible. The Lion is the Lamb. The King is the Sacrifice. The Judge is the Savior. Jesus conquered not by crushing His enemies but by giving His life.
Notice something else. The Lamb is standing in the midst of the throne. The center of heaven is not the elders, nor the angels, nor even the four living creatures. The center of heaven is Jesus. Church, let me ask you a question: what is at the center of your life today? Is it your career, your ambitions, your fears, your frustrations, your finances, or is it Jesus? If heaven revolves around the Lamb, our lives should revolve around the Lamb too.
John notices that the Lamb has seven horns and seven eyes. The Scripture explains:
“Which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.” (Revelation 5:6)
This connects beautifully with Isaiah 11:2:
The Spirit of the Lord
The Spirit of Wisdom
The Spirit of Understanding
The Spirit of Counsel
The Spirit of Might
The Spirit of Knowledge
The Fear of the Lord
The seven horns symbolize perfect power, while the seven eyes symbolize perfect knowledge. Nothing escapes His sight. If somebody has lied about you, God sees it. If somebody has mistreated you, God sees it. If you have remained faithful when nobody noticed, God sees it. Nothing escapes the eyes of the Lamb.
Then something remarkable happens. The Lamb approaches the throne and takes the scroll from the right hand of Him who sits on the throne. No angel could do it. No elder could do it. No living creature could do it. Only Jesus, the Son of God, the Redeemer of mankind, was worthy.
⸻
5. Worship Breaks Out in Heaven (Revelation 5:8–10)
The moment Jesus takes the scroll, worship erupts. The four living creatures fall down. The twenty-four elders fall down. Each one has a harp and golden bowls full of incense.
The Bible says:
“Which are the prayers of the saints.” (Revelation 5:8)
Church, please don’t joke with prayer. Your prayers are not disappearing into thin air. They are not wasted. Your tears are not wasted, your intercession is not wasted, and your prayer meetings are not wasted. The Bible says they rise before God as incense. Later in Revelation 8 we will see these prayers presented before God and connected with divine activity on the earth.
Then heaven begins to sing:
“You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood.” (Revelation 5:9)
Church, this is the reason Jesus is worthy. He paid the price nobody else could pay. Paul had revelation. John had revelation. The angels had power. The elders had crowns. But only Jesus had redemption. He alone could reconcile humanity back to God.
⸻
6. Every Tribe, Every Tongue, Every Nation (Revelation 5:9–10)
Church, I love this next part. The song says:
“Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.”
This is why I get excited when I see different nationalities in church. This is why I don’t believe church should belong to one tribe, one language, one culture, or one people group. Look at heaven. Heaven is already multicultural. Heaven is already international. The blood of Jesus did not only flow for Switzerland, Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, or any single nation. It flowed for everyone.
And notice what Jesus has made us:
“And have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.” (Revelation 5:10)
What a privilege. What a promise. What an encouragement for every believer.
⸻
7. Heaven Erupts in Worship (Revelation 5:11–14)
John then sees countless angels—thousands upon thousands, ten thousand times ten thousand—and they are all worshipping.
The Bible says:
“Saying with a loud voice.” (Revelation 5:12)
Church, heaven is loud about Jesus. People shout at football matches, concerts, and political rallies, yet sometimes become uncomfortable shouting for Jesus. Heaven, however, is not silent. They cry:
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!”
Scripture repeatedly connects shouting with victory:
Joshua 6:16 — “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city!”
Psalm 47:5 — “God has gone up with a shout.”
Psalm 100:1 — “Make a joyful shout to the Lord.”
Church, heaven is already rehearsing what eternity will look like. May we never be ashamed of Jesus. May we never be ashamed to worship Him. May we never be ashamed to praise His name.
The chapter closes with every creature in heaven and on earth worshipping both the One who sits on the throne and the Lamb. The four living creatures say, “Amen,” and the twenty-four elders fall down and worship. What a glorious picture. The Lamb is worthy. The Lamb is worshipped. The Lamb is glorified. And Church, never forget: the Lamb is coming again.

Jesus, the Lamb Who Was Slain 🔥
This devotion showed me Jesus once again in a different way and reminded me why He is worthy of our praise.
Yes, Jesus is the King of kings, mightier than all the heavenly hosts, the powerful Lion. Yet He was worthy to open the scroll because He was first a Lamb. A Lamb who sacrificed Himself for humanity. A Lamb who gave Himself for God's beloved creation. He is not worthy because of His battles, but because of His sacrifice.
That's exactly what speaks to me. So many people want to prove their power, show their strength, and demonstrate how great they are. But true power comes through sacrifice. True power comes through…
