INTRODUCTION

Hello Church, welcome once again to our journey through the book of Ruth. Yesterday as we read chapter 3, we saw Ruth faithfully serving Naomi in the field of Boaz. Today, we move from the field to the threshing floor, where God’s plan for Ruth begins to unfold.

As you read Ruth 3:1–18, pay attention to wise counsel, obedience, character, integrity, patience, honour, and waiting on God’s timing. Open your Bible, read the chapter carefully, and let the Word speak to your heart.

Now, let’s get into the Word.

1.Ruth Did Not Allow Pain to Stop Her

Ruth 3:1–5 Naomi says to Ruth:

“My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it may be well with you?” — Ruth 3:1

Wow! Church, look at the relationship between Naomi and Ruth. We have already seen Ruth’s loyalty towards this spiritual mother of hers. Ruth knew that she would not have become who she was without Naomi’s investment in her. Today, we have many people who simply want to call somebody their spiritual daughter or spiritual son, but spiritual parenthood requires investment. You cannot just claim people as spiritual children when you have not fed them, led them, prayed for them, corrected them, or helped them discover the place God is calling them into.

Naomi had invested in Ruth, and Ruth never forgot Naomi. Now Naomi was thinking about Ruth’s future. This is what genuine spiritual motherhood looks like: you don’t only think about what people can do for you; you begin to think about what will happen to them after you.

Naomi then gives Ruth counsel about how she should approach Boaz. Notice something: Ruth was not even looking for a husband. She was simply serving Naomi. Yet God was already preparing something for her.

Naomi tells Ruth to wash herself, anoint herself, put on her best garment, and go to the threshing floor after Boaz had finished eating and drinking. She tells her to notice where he lies, uncover his feet, lie down, and wait for his instruction (Ruth 3:3–4).

Church, this also shows us the importance of preparation. Many people want a life partner, but they have not prepared themselves to become the kind of husband or wife they are praying for. They don’t know how to communicate, how to serve, how to manage a home, how to discipline themselves, or how to receive godly counsel.

I have observed that people who have been married for years without ever receiving healthy mentorship can struggle because what they know is simply what they bring into the marriage. Wise counsel is one of the greatest gifts a young believer can receive.

2. Ruth Obeyed Wise Counsel

Ruth 3:5–6

Ruth responds:

“All that you say to me I will do.” — Ruth 3:5

Wow! This is the power of wise counsel.

Ruth could have looked at Naomi’s instruction and said, “What kind of arrangement is this? Why should I go and lie at a man’s feet?” In our generation, some people might even call it an arranged relationship and immediately reject it. But Ruth trusted the wisdom of someone who had spiritually invested in her.

She simply said, “Everything you tell me, I will do.”

Church, this is humility.

I wrote about this principle in my book, Whether to Know He or She Is the One. One of the things we need to learn in life is how to receive wise counsel. Ruth was willing to learn.

I have come to realize that people who isolate themselves from godly spiritual authority often develop a pattern of doing whatever they want. They don’t want anyone to correct them, advise them, or question their decisions, and many times they don’t end well.

If the person giving you counsel has genuinely invested in you and is walking according to God’s Word, learn to listen. Ruth did according to everything Naomi instructed her.

3. Ruth Was a Virtuous Woman

Ruth 3:7–11

After Boaz had eaten and was lying down, Ruth came quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down. At midnight, Boaz was startled and asked:

“Who are you?”

She answered:

“I am Ruth, your maidservant. Take your maidservant under your wing, for you are a close relative.” — Ruth 3:9

Boaz responds:

“Blessed are you of the Lord, my daughter!” — Ruth 3:10

And then he says:

“All the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.” — Ruth 3:11

Church, this is powerful. Ruth’s character had become known throughout the city.

Today we are talking about a Ruth. So, if you are a woman reading this, can the people around you call you a virtuous woman? And if you are a man, can they call you a man of integrity?

A virtuous woman is not simply somebody who knows how to dress well or look beautiful. There is character, wisdom, humility, discipline, respect, service, and self-control.

And for our young people preparing for marriage, don’t only pray for a virtuous spouse. Become a virtuous person. Don’t simply ask God for the right person while refusing to allow God to make you the right person.

We also have to be careful about cultural movements that cause us to reject God’s design for men and women. There is nothing wrong with standing against the mistreatment of women or defending the dignity and protection of women, but when any ideology moves into a place where God’s Word is rejected, we must be careful. Our standard remains Scripture.

And look at Boaz: he was also a man of integrity. Ruth was at his feet, but he did not take advantage of her.

Church, we need men like Boaz. Men who can have power and opportunity but still exercise self-control. Men who will honour women rather than exploit them. Men who will protect rather than manipulate.

That is why we have Men of Valor, Rising Sons, Virtuous Ladies, and Purpose. If you are not connected to one of these groups, please speak to the leaders and join the appropriate WhatsApp group so that you can be counselled, grow, and grow properly.

4. Boaz Did Not Take Advantage of Ruth

Ruth 3:12–14

Boaz tells Ruth that there is another relative who is closer than he is. He says:

“Stay this night, and in the morning it shall be that if he will perform the duty of a close relative for you—good; let him do it. But if he does not want to perform the duty for you, then I will perform the duty for you.” — Ruth 3:13

Church, this is another powerful lesson. Boaz had an opportunity to take advantage of the situation, but he didn’t. He respected Ruth. He respected the process. He respected the law. He respected God.

If this were our generation, some people would see such an opportunity and say, “This is my chance.” But Boaz proved that he was a man of integrity.

So don’t only pray for a Boaz because you want someone to marry you. Pray that you will also become a person with the character of Boaz.

Integrity is doing what is right even when you have an opportunity to do what is wrong.

And Ruth also demonstrated integrity. She didn’t manipulate Boaz. She trusted the process.

Church, don’t sacrifice your future because you are impatient with the process. There is a blessing in doing things God’s way.

5. “Wait, My Daughter”

Ruth 3:15–18

Before Ruth leaves, Boaz gives her six measures of barley to take back to Naomi. When she returns, Naomi asks what happened, and Ruth tells her everything.

Then Naomi says:

“Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will turn out; for the man will not rest until he has concluded the matter this day.” — Ruth 3:18

Church, listen to those words: “Sit still.”

Sometimes we have prayed, fasted, served, worked, and done everything we know to do, and now God says, wait. Waiting does not mean God has forgotten you. Sometimes heaven is working while you are waiting.

Ruth had done her part. Boaz had done his part. Now the matter had to be settled according to the proper process. Don’t destroy something God is building because you cannot wait.

And notice that Ruth did not return empty-handed. Boaz gave her evidence that something was happening, even though the final outcome had not yet been revealed. Sometimes God gives you enough evidence to keep believing, but not enough information to see the entire picture.

Wait. Keep trusting. Keep praying. Keep serving. Keep your character. The story is not finished.

What Is God Saying to Us?

Church, Ruth chapter 3 teaches us that the fire of God must be translated into obedience, character, patience, honour, integrity, and faithfulness.

Ruth did not know the whole plan, but she obeyed. She did not manipulate her way into a relationship, but she followed wise counsel. Boaz had an opportunity to compromise, but he maintained his integrity. And when the process was not yet complete, Naomi told Ruth to wait.

Church, this is the kind of fire we need in our lives and churches. Not merely a fire that makes us excited in church, but a fire that makes us faithful when nobody is watching.

Sometimes the Unleashing Agenda will require you to move. Sometimes it will require you to serve. Sometimes it will require you to obey. And sometimes, after you have done everything you were instructed to do, it will require you to sit still and wait.

May God give us the grace to know the difference.

And may we never forget that God is able to take an ordinary decision made in obedience and connect it to an extraordinary destiny.

Prayer Points

1. Thank God for His Word and for the wisdom, counsel, favour, and direction He gives us as we walk with Him.

2. Pray that the fire of God in your life will produce obedience, humility, loyalty, purity, integrity, patience, and faithfulness, even when nobody is watching.

3. Ask the Lord to give you patience to trust His timing and the strength not to compromise or take shortcuts while waiting for what He has prepared for you.
