Daily Bible Plan - 1 Timothy 5

28 April 2026

Devotion by Reverend Joseph Antwi

Theme: Sharing the Love of Christ to the Undying World — Church Without Walls

1. Honor in Relationships (vv.1–2)

Paul begins by teaching Timothy how to relate to people in the church:

He says not to rebuke an older man harshly, but to appeal to him as a father, and younger men as brothers. Older women are to be treated as mothers, and younger women as sisters—with all purity.

This establishes a key leadership principle:

The church is a family before it is an organization.

So leadership is not abuse of authority—it is relational wisdom expressed in honor and purity.

2. Care for Widows with Wisdom (vv.3–16)

Paul then moves into a structured teaching on widows.

He first commands:

“Take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her” (v.3)

But immediately he introduces discernment and responsibility.

He explains that:

* A widow who truly has no family support should be helped by the church

* But if she has children or relatives, they must first care for her (vv.4, 8)

* This is because faith must be expressed through family responsibility

Then Paul introduces a practical age-based guideline:

Widows 60 years and above may be enrolled for church support (v.9), meaning they are recognized for long-term care.

But younger widows are generally not placed on that list, because Paul warns that if they are idle, they may:

* Become restless

* Move from house to house

* Become gossipers and busybodies

* Say things they should not say (vv.11–13)

So he encourages younger widows to:

* Remarry if possible

* Raise children

* Manage their households

* Avoid giving the enemy opportunity for distraction (vv.14–15)

This shows a clear principle:

The church supports mercy, but also promotes responsibility and productivity.

Older widows are honored and cared for. Younger widows are guided toward rebuilding life and stability.

3. Leadership Ethics and Order (vv.16)

Paul closes the widow section by reminding the church:

If any believing woman has widows in her family, she should care for them so the church is not burdened.

This teaches us that:

* The church is not meant to carry what families should handle

* Leadership requires wise distribution of responsibility

* God’s house must function with order, not dependency imbalance

4. Integrity in Leadership Structures (vv.17–18)

Paul now turns to church leaders:

“Elders who do their work well should be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.” (v.17)

This “double honor” includes respect and material support.

Paul strengthens this with Scripture:

“You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.”

“The worker deserves his wages.” (v.18)

This means spiritual labor must be honored practically.

Those who serve the church spiritually:

* Pastors

* Teachers

* Apostolic leaders

* Spiritual overseers

should not only be respected but also supported by the people they serve.

The Bible clearly affirms that:

* “The worker deserves his wages” (Luke 10:7)

* Those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:14)

This includes:

* Financial support where possible

* Honor and appreciation

* Practical care from the church

* And voluntary generosity from believers

Even outside structured giving, individuals can choose to bless those who feed them spiritually.

Yes, leadership abuse has caused criticism in some places, but abuse does not cancel truth. The church must still obey Scripture by honoring and caring for faithful servants of God.

This also extends to deacons, deaconesses, officers, and all who serve faithfully. Even when financial ability is limited, honor must never be absent.

5. Accountability and Protection of Leaders (vv.19–21)

Paul continues with balance:

* Do not entertain accusations against elders without proper witnesses (v.19)

* But those who persist in sin must be corrected openly (v.20)

* And all leadership must be handled without favoritism (v.21)

So leadership must hold both:

* Protection from false accusation

* Accountability when sin is confirmed

6. Careful Leadership Appointment (v.22)

“Never be in a hurry about appointing a church leader…”

Leadership must be tested before assignment.

Character must be proven before promotion.

7. The Revelation of Character (vv.24–25)

Paul closes by showing a deep truth:

Some sins are obvious and go before judgment, but others become clear later. In the same way, good works are also revealed over time.

So leadership must always be built on:

* Tested character

* Not appearance

* Not emotion

* Not speed

Final Reflection

From 1 Timothy 5, effective leadership is built on:

* Honor in relationships

* Wisdom in care

* Responsibility in structure

* Integrity in leadership support

* Fairness in judgment

* Patience in leadership development

* Discernment in character evaluation

🔥🔥🔥

1 Timothy 5 calls for accountability: leaders are to be honored, structure and order are to be maintained, abuse avoided, and integrity preserved.

For me, this shows that effective leadership means acting with wisdom, fairness, and responsibility. Paul’s guidance to Timothy makes it clear that order in the church is not restrictive, but protective, so that the Body of Christ can function in balance and faithfulness.

God bless you, Pastor, and the Comms Team for this devotion. 🙌
