Journeying with Paul — From Galatians to Romans
Devotion by Pastor Joseph Antwi
Theme: From Upper Room to Every Room
Introduction:
Excitingly, we are continuing our journey through the letters of the Apostle Paul. These inspired epistles are more than ancient words — they are Spirit-breathed truth, written to strengthen, correct, and encourage the early churches, and just as much, us today.
Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles (Romans 11:13), was uniquely called by God to proclaim the gospel to those outside of Israel. His letters to the Galatians and Romans lay a solid foundation for understanding salvation, grace, and the life we are called to live in Christ.
As we move from Galatians into Romans, we move from a strong defense of the gospel of grace to a deep theological explanation of it. Let’s take a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned so far.
Overview of Galatians and Romans
Galatians – The Gospel of Freedom
Paul writes with urgency and passion, confronting the Galatian believers who were being led astray by false teachers. These teachers were adding law back into the message of grace. Paul defends the truth that we are justified by faith alone, not by works of the law.
• Key Verse: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free…” — Galatians 5:1
• Main Theme: Salvation is by grace through faith, not through human effort or law-keeping.
• Application: We are called to live in the freedom of the Spirit, not in religious bondage.
Romans – The Gospel Explained
Romans is Paul’s most complete explanation of the gospel. In chapters 1–10, he explains the universal problem of sin, the gift of righteousness through faith, and what it means to live in the Spirit. While Galatians defends the gospel, Romans unfolds its depth and glory.
• Key Verse: “The righteous shall live by faith.” — Romans 1:17
• Main Theme: All have sinned, but all can be justified by faith in Jesus Christ.
• Application: We are not only forgiven — we are made new, empowered to walk in righteousness by the Spirit.
⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻
Key Scripture
Romans 10:9–10 (NIV): “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
Devotional Reflection
Paul’s message in both letters is clear and unshakable: We are saved not by what we do, but by what Christ has done.
In Galatians, he warns us not to return to religious slavery. In Romans, he invites us to fully embrace a life rooted in God’s mercy, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and marked by confident hope.
We are not only freed from sin, but we are freed to live — to love, to serve, to walk in obedience not out of fear, but out of joy.
Reflection Questions
1. Am I resting in God’s grace, or am I still trying to earn His approval through performance?
2. What habits, thoughts, or fears keep me from walking in the freedom Christ has already won for me?
3. How does understanding that righteousness is a gift through faith change my view of God and myself?
4. Who can I share the simple, powerful message of the gospel with this week?
Closing Encouragement
Church, let us hold tightly to the truth we’ve seen in Galatians and Romans — that the gospel is enough. Jesus is enough. His grace is sufficient. His Spirit empowers us. Let’s continue to walk by faith, live in freedom, and proclaim this gospel boldly to the world around us.
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him…”
— Colossians 2:6
