This Is How We Love

Devotion by Reverend Pastor Joseph Antwi

Introduction:

Please open your Bible to Romans 12:9–20. Take a moment to read this passage carefully. Highlight or write down anything the Lord speaks to you. Let the Holy Spirit breathe on the Word.

This devotion comes with a burden in my heart for purity, for true love, and for walking in the Spirit in this hour.

A Call to Love Without a Mask

It is very, very important to note that in Romans 12:9, Paul is admonishing the Church to live a life without hypocrisy. He says:

“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.”

It’s obvious and very easy for us as believers, including you and I, to love in pretense. Sometimes our words and actions say one thing, but our hearts tell a different story. We smile, but carry hidden offense. We serve, but inwardly compete. This is not the kind of love Paul is calling for.

God desires genuine love one that flows from a purified heart, not performance.

Honor, Humility, and Holy Fire

Paul goes on to say:

• Be affectionate toward one another.

• Give preference to one another.

• Do not think more highly of yourself than you ought.

• Be fervent in spirit, rejoice in hope, patient in tribulation, and constant in prayer.

These are not just Christian values—they’re the Kingdom culture. They mark a life empowered by the Holy Spirit.

My Personal Story of Forgiveness

Some years ago, I entrusted a very large amount of money to a trusted fellow minister. He was supposed to purchase a property for me, and I believed he would. But instead of using the money for the intended purpose, he used it for personal needs without telling me.

It hurt deeply. I was shocked, bitter, and broken. How could someone I served with do that?

But as I sought the Lord in prayer, the Holy Spirit helped me see it differently. God revealed the man’s struggle, and He invited me to let go. Not because the action was right but because unforgiveness would trap me.

So I forgave him. And to fully release the bitterness, I even sent additional money. Not out of weakness but out of obedience. And do you know what happened? That pain began to dissolve. That heavy weight lifted. And I felt free able to love again, even if it meant from a distance.

Forgiveness doesn’t erase the facts, but it restores your freedom.

The Jesus Model of Love

Verses 14–20 take it even further.

Paul says: “Bless those who persecute you… Repay no one evil for evil… If your enemy is hungry, feed him.”

This isn’t easy. It goes against human instinct. But this is what makes our faith different. Other systems say, “Get revenge.” But Jesus says, “Forgive and bless.”

Even on the cross, surrounded by hate, Jesus prayed: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

He didn’t curse them. He blessed them. And He invites us to do the same.

From the Upper Room to Every Room

In this season, we are commissioned to move from the Upper Room to every room. But to carry this message, we must walk in power and purity.

We must be blameless before the Lord. As Paul writes in Colossians 1:28:“Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.”

That’s our goal not just emotional healing, but spiritual maturity. To be found blameless, holy, and walking in love.

Reflect, Share & Discuss

Here’s what I encourage you to do:

1. Read Romans 12:9–20 again—slowly and prayerfully.

2. Write down what the Holy Spirit reveals to you.

3. Share this devotion with 10–20 people.

4. On WhatsApp or in your circle, discuss what the Lord is saying to you through this Word.

Let this be more than a devotion—let it be a doorway to genuine transformation.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for Your Word. I ask You to cleanse my heart from every form of hidden offense or fake love. Teach me to love purely, forgive quickly, and walk blamelessly before You. Fill me with the power of the Holy Spirit, that I may live out this truth in my daily life. Let me be a vessel that moves from the Upper Room to every roomcarrying Your love, Your fire, and Your purity. In Jesus’ name, amen.
