Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

Devotion by Pastor Joseph Antwi

Introduction:

Today, we dive into one of the most powerful chapters in the New Testament—Romans 6. Paul teaches us the true meaning of grace: it’s not a license to sin, but the power to live free from it.

Now open your Bibles to Romans 6:1–23.

Read silently and meditate on the passage.

After reading, take a few moments to reflect.

Then, record a short video with your Bible open, sharing what God spoke to you from this chapter.

Send your video to the media team for compilation.

Also, share your thoughts on the group chat and with as many friends as possible. Let the Word spread!

Three Devotional Points:

Key Verse:

Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

1. Dead to Sin (v.6-7):

As believers, we are no longer slaves to sin—our old self was crucified with Christ. That means we are no longer under sin’s control and are empowered to say no to its desires. The call is not to manage sin but to put it to death.

Recently, I came across a video on social media where a preacher was asked how to overcome pornography addiction. His response was, “Keep watching the porn, but start reading your Bible. Eventually, the desire will fade.” While this may sound appealing to a generation shaped by short-form content and quick solutions, it is a deeply flawed and dangerous teaching.

Scripture does not tell us to coexist with sin—it commands us to flee from it.

• 1 Corinthians 6:18 – “Flee from sexual immorality.”

• 2 Timothy 2:22 – “Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace…”

You cannot overcome sin by continuing to indulge in it. What we feed grows. If we keep exposing ourselves to sin, we awaken the very nature that Christ died to bury. As children of God, we must guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23), renew our minds (Romans 12:2), and pursue holiness.

2. Alive to God (v.11-14):

Paul calls us to “consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” This is not just a mindset—it’s a lifestyle. To be alive to God means we actively present ourselves as instruments of righteousness. Grace doesn’t cover up compromise—it empowers transformation. Sin no longer reigns over us; Christ does. Therefore, we must not allow sin to dominate our thoughts, habits, or desires.

3. Slaves of Righteousness (v.15-23):

Paul uses the metaphor of slavery to show who we truly belong to. Before Christ, we were slaves to sin, which led to shame and death. But now, we are slaves to righteousness, leading to holiness and eternal life.

“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.” (v.22)

You become a slave to what you consistently obey. So choose daily to submit to God, knowing that true freedom is found in total surrender to Christ.

Reflection Questions:

• What truth stood out to you most from Romans 6?

• In what area of your life is God calling you to walk in righteousness?

• What practical step will you take today to die to sin and live to God?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, thank You for setting us free from the power of sin. Help us walk in the new life You have given us through Christ. Teach us to flee from sin and pursue righteousness. Let our lives reflect Your holiness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
