In Mark 12, Jesus first tells the parable of the vineyard—a parable that directly challenges the religious leaders. Immediately afterward, they begin to confront Jesus with trick questions. But Jesus not only responds wisely; He reveals God’s truth in the process.
“Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar”
The Pharisees and Herodians came to trap Jesus, asking: “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar?” (vv. 13–14).The question is deceitful, but Jesus sees through their intent and lifts the issue to a deeper level: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God” (v. 17).
With this, Jesus makes it clear: yes, we live in this world and fulfill our responsibilities—paying taxes, taking responsibility, respecting law and order. But our heart, our life, our loyalty belong to God. Just as the image of a well-known ruler is stamped on a coin, God’s imprint on our lives shows to whom we truly belong—to Him, and we are created to honor Him.
Soon after, the Sadducees approach Jesus—a group that did not believe in the resurrection. With a hypothetical question about a woman who marries seven brothers in succession (vv. 18–23), they try to corner Jesus theologically.
But Jesus broadens their perspective: life after the resurrection is not simply a continuation of earthly life. It is new life with God, free from the limitations of this world: “They are like the angels in heaven” (v. 25).And He speaks the decisive word: “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living” (v. 27). In this way, Jesus shows us that death does not have the final say. Our life is in God’s hands—today and for all eternity.
Whether Pharisees, Herodians, or Sadducees—both groups wanted to test and expose Jesus. But Jesus makes it clear:
Human schemes cannot shake God’s truth.
God gives our lives direction and meaning—now and forever.
Proverbs 19:21 reminds us: “A person may plan many things, but ultimately it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Carry this verse with you throughout your day—let it speak to your heart, guide you, and motivate you to follow God intentionally.

Amen. Jesus knows our hearts and intentions, therefore there is no need to pretend in any way (following the two previous devotionals). He will always have an answer to our questions, even those of people who don't believe in the gospel, those who refuse to accept God's word and argue with it. Whatever we do, God is sovereign, and what is written will be fulfilled. What He said is the truth, and we will see it. Hallelujah!
Every tongue will confess… every eye will see that Jesus reigns…
Wow, thank you Deaconess Sarah for this devotion it truly blessed me and gives me something to dwell on today.
I love how Jesus always seems to make everyone around Him not only think about their questions but dwell on the Word of God!
This just reminds me that even if we give the world what is due to the world we belog to Christ and just as a coin has an imprint of its maker so do we.
I love how the sadducees thought “oh we have Him with this one” but Jesus always proofs - as Deaconess Sarah said so beautifully - *Human schemes cannot shake God’s truth!*
He not only opened their perspective but also made m…
