The Book of JUDGES
30. September 2026
Devotion by Reverend Joseph Antwi
Theme: Raising Godly Families
Sub-theme: New Directions Scripture Reading: JUDGES 6:25–40
INTRODUCTION
Church, yesterday we stopped at Judges 6:24, where Gideon encountered the Lord and built an altar to Him. Gideon was a man who considered himself insignificant, from the weakest clan in Manasseh and the least in his father’s house. Yet God called him a “mighty man of valor.”
Gideon saw weakness, but God saw what He had placed inside him. But notice what happens next: God does not only call Gideon; He gives him instructions.
NEW DIRECTION REQUIRES DEALING WITH THE OLD
Judges 6:25–26 says:
“Now it came to pass the same night that the LORD said to him, ‘Take your father’s young bull, the second bull of seven years old, and tear down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the wooden image that is beside it; and build an altar to the LORD your God on top of this rock in the proper arrangement…’” NKJV
Before Gideon could fight Midian, God told him to deal with what was happening in his own father’s house.
There was an altar of Baal in his father’s household.
Church, this is important for Raising Godly Families. Sometimes we are asking God to change our city, our church, our children and our future, while God is saying, “Start with your house.”
There are patterns and influences that can be established within families and affect the next generation. Gideon’s first assignment was to confront one of those patterns.
Sometimes your new direction begins by tearing down what has been hindering God’s purpose.
Father, every altar that has taken Your place in our lives, our homes and our families, let it be torn down in the name of Jesus. Every pattern that fights Your purpose, give us grace and courage to confront it. Amen.
Gideon obeyed, although he was afraid. He did it at night because he feared the people of the city.
This teaches us something simple: you can be afraid and still obey God.
When the men discovered what Gideon had done, they wanted him killed. But his father, Joash, defended him:
“If he is a god, let him plead for himself, because his altar has been torn down!” Judges 6:31 NKJV
The false god could not defend itself. One man’s obedience had challenged an altar that had influenced his community.
MY PERSONAL FAVORITE EXAMPLE
One of my personal favorite examples of dealing with the old before entering a new direction is the story of a family that decided to stop allowing anger, bitterness and harsh words to control their home.
For years, whenever there was disagreement, family members shouted, withdrew from one another and allowed resentment to grow. It had become normal, and the children were beginning to copy the same behavior.
But one day, the parents recognized that they could not keep praying for a peaceful family while continuing to protect the pattern that was destroying their peace. They gathered the family together, apologized to one another and made a decision to establish a new pattern: they would pray before responding in anger, speak respectfully and resolve conflicts instead of carrying them from one day to another.
The change did not happen overnight, but the direction of the home changed. What had been accepted as normal was confronted, and a new atmosphere began to develop.
That is what Gideon did. He did not merely ask God for a new assignment; he obeyed God by confronting the old altar.
Sometimes the new direction God wants to bring into your family will begin with one person saying, “This pattern stops with me.”
GOD EMPOWERS THOSE HE CALLS
Judges 6:34 says:
“But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon…” NKJV
Gideon was not going to accomplish this assignment by his own strength. God empowered him.
In the Old Testament, the Spirit of God often came upon people for particular assignments. Under the New Covenant, believers have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit through Christ.
When God gives an assignment, He gives grace for that assignment.
GIDEON ASKS FOR CONFIRMATION
Gideon now wanted confirmation that God would truly save Israel through him.
He asked for a sign involving a fleece. First, the fleece should be wet while the ground remained dry. God did it. Then Gideon asked for the opposite, and God did that too.
Earlier, Gideon had also received confirmation when fire consumed his offering.
So Gideon was learning to trust God’s direction.
Can we ask God for confirmation? Gideon’s story shows that we can sincerely seek confirmation, but signs should never replace Scripture, prayer, wisdom and godly counsel.
The Pharisees demanded a sign from Jesus, but Jesus pointed them to the sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:38–40). There is a difference between sincerely seeking God’s confirmation and demanding a sign because we refuse to believe.
If you are praying about a job, education, marriage or an important family decision, pray, study God’s Word, seek wise counsel and ask God for confirmation.
The Bible says:
“By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.”
2 Corinthians 13:1 NKJV
Sometimes God can use another person, circumstances, Scripture, prayer or even a dream to confirm a direction. But every supposed sign must be tested against God’s Word.
Don’t make a major decision based on one emotional experience. Pray, seek the Word, seek counsel and allow God to establish your direction.
RAISING GODLY FAMILIES
This brings us back to our theme.
Our children will one day make decisions without us standing beside them. We must teach them how to pray, read Scripture, seek wisdom and recognize godly direction.
Don’t simply tell your children, “God will guide you.” Teach them how to seek God.
Let them see you pray before making decisions. Let them hear your testimonies. Let them see you turn to Scripture. Let them understand that faith is not simply something they inherited, but something they must personally live.
The Gideon of tomorrow may be sitting in our children’s ministry today. The leader of tomorrow may be growing up in your home.
So let us raise children who know God, understand His Word, recognize His direction and have the courage to obey Him.
May the Lord give us wisdom for every decision, confirmation for every direction and courage for every assignment He gives us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Church,
as you read these devotions, don’t let the devotion replace your personal Bible reading. Read another book of the Bible alongside these devotions. It could be John, Acts or another book in the New Testament. Read in the morning, read again in the evening, and meditate on the Word throughout the day.
This will help you grow in your knowledge and understanding of God’s Word.
If this devotion has blessed you, share it with your family, friends and loved ones. Leave your comments in the comment section, and let’s continue spreading the Gospel.
God bless you.
Shalom,

What really stood out to me were these two quotes:
“Sometimes we are asking God to change our city, our church, our children, and our future, while God is saying, ‘Start with your house.’”
“Sometimes the new direction God wants to bring into your family will begin with one person saying, ‘This pattern stops with me.’”
- We can’t start something new while we’re still holding on to the old.
- Like the Bible says, you cannot put new wine into old wineskins (Matthew 9:17).
- whatever new thing we want to start in our world, bring it into your homes first
If we want our schools to experience the peace of God, I first need to bring the peace…
I also love the part, where Gideon had to deal with the old! Before God called him for his bigger purpose, Gideon had to deal with his old and personal stuff first which is so powerful for me.
What it tells me is that, even though we might have received a new Word, assignment, direction or whatever... still, sometimes we have to look less far and see the patterns or problems that are right in front of us. It's like God is preparing Gideon for his purpose through that, wonderful!
Thank you Pastor and Comms. Squad❤️

*“This pattern ends with me.”* 🔥🔥
Wow, thank you Pastor Joseph for this devotion! What a breakfast 🥞🔥💪
- First, the old must always be torn down before God can lead us into a new direction.
- I also love how the Bible says:*Gideon was afraid, but he still did it at night.*
->Obedience can sometimes feel scary, but in the end what counts is your obedience, whether it happens in front of everyone or in secret.
- Asking God for confirmation with a pure heart is not wrong. It actually shows your surrender and obedience to Him.

Sweet, woww i love the Word of God, what a start into the day!!
Something I learned today is that emotions are not a bad thing. Even Gideon had emotions and experienced fear. But the important thing is that we don’t allow our emotions to become the guide of our lives!
I also loved the part where Pastor spoke about dealing with the old. He’s not saying we should run away from it and simply forget it, but that we should intentionally deal with it so that, for example, old patterns don’t return. And again, emotions play a big role in this.
Gideon could have said no because the altar of Baal belonged to his father. Yet despite his fear…
