Prayer of the day:

Lord, I acknowledge my tendency to rush ahead without seeking Your guidance. Help me to start each day by laying my requests before You and waiting expectantly for Your direction. Empower me to live out the teachings of Jesus, cultivating a heart of integrity, purity, and grace. As I trust You to lead me one step at a time, may my life be a channel of Your blessings to those around me. Thank You for Your unwavering guidance and love. Amen.

Directions for Life

Pippa and I often find ourselves in a rush, neglecting to plan our car journeys adequately. This often leads us in the wrong direction, and we frequently get lost—even with Google Maps! It’s taken me a while to understand the importance of obtaining and following good directions. Many of us approach life in a similar manner: we hurry forward without realizing the necessity of seeking proper guidance. By following God’s directions for life, we can experience His blessings and, in turn, become a blessing to others.

Scriptural Foundations for Life’s Directions

1. Start Each Day Waiting for Directions

(Psalm 5:1–12)

Key Message: Beginning your day by seeking God’s guidance sets a positive tone for all that follows.

• Outcomes: David exemplifies this by laying his requests before God each morning and waiting expectantly (vv. 2–3). This practice brings a sense of direction and protection throughout the day.

• Application: Commit to starting each day with prayer, presenting your needs to God and anticipating His guidance. This habit fosters a deeper reliance on Him and aligns your path with His will.

2. Follow Jesus’ Directions for Life

(Matthew 5:21–42)

• Key Message: Jesus provides a ‘highway code’ for a blessed life, emphasizing the importance of addressing not just actions but also attitudes and thoughts.

• Outcomes: He challenges us to:

• Control Anger: Avoid speaking angry words against others (vv. 21–22).

• Seek Reconciliation: Make amends with those you have conflicts with (vv. 23–26).

• Maintain Purity: Guard your eyes and heart against lustful thoughts (vv. 27–30).

• Honor Commitments: Uphold the sanctity of marriage and avoid divorce as a means of convenience (vv. 31–32).

• Speak Truthfully: Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’ (v. 37).

• Respond with Grace: Bless even those who wrong you, avoiding retaliation (vv. 38–42).

• Application: Reflect on these teachings and assess areas in your life that need alignment with Jesus’ directions. Implement changes to cultivate a lifestyle marked by integrity, purity, and grace.

3. Trust God to Direct You One Step at a Time

(Genesis 11:10–13:18)

Key Message: God’s call to Abraham illustrates the journey of faith, where trust in God’s promises leads to blessings not just for oneself but for others as well.

Outcomes: Abraham’s obedience to God’s call resulted in:

• Personal Blessing: God promised to make Abraham into a great nation and bless him (12:2).

• Becoming a Blessing: Through Abraham, all peoples on earth would be blessed (12:3).

• Guidance: God directed Abraham step by step, even when the path was unclear (12:1, 4).

Application: Embrace a journey of faith by trusting God’s guidance, even when the future seems uncertain. Recognize that His blessings are intended to flow through you to impact others positively.

Overall Takeaway

Following God’s directions requires intentionality and trust. By seeking His guidance daily, adhering to Jesus’ teachings, and trusting Him step by step, we position ourselves to experience His blessings and become conduits of those blessings to others.
