Sons of God — Called to Freedom, Not Bondage
Scripture Reading: Galatians 4:1–7, Galatians 5:1
“Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’” – Galatians 4:6 (NKJV)
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” – Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
How do we know we are truly sons of God? Is it by what we do? The rituals we follow? Or is it something deeper?
Paul gives us a clear answer in Galatians 4:6: It is the Spirit who reveals our identity. The Spirit of the Son has been sent into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father.” It’s not just a knowledge we carry in our minds, but a deep revelation that flows from within. Sonship is not earned. It is received.
As a Pastor, I have often seen people try to earn their sonship. They may be excited at first—joyfully receiving the gospel, feeling accepted in the church, even calling me the most amazing man of God they’ve ever met. But I’ve also seen many of these same people falter quickly. The excitement fades, and they turn back to worldly pursuits or drift toward every new teaching they hear. Just like the Galatians, they move from truth back into bondage—because their roots were not deep and the Spirit was not their anchor.
Paul was deeply concerned about this shift. In Galatians 4:15–16, he reminds the church how they once received him like an angel, even during his illness. But later, he became like an enemy to them. How quickly honor turns to offense when hearts are not guarded by truth. Sadly, this is something we also see in our churches today—people turning against those who once labored over them spiritually, influenced by divisive voices that twist truth for their own gain.
Watch out for such people. They enter the flock to scatter, not to gather. The Spirit of Truth leads us into unity and freedom; the spirit of division leads to bondage.
Paul concludes in Galatians 5:1 with a clarion call:
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free!”
So I ask you: Do you desire to live under the law, or do you want to walk in freedom? The law binds with demands; the Spirit frees with identity. The law says “do this to be accepted”; grace says “you are accepted—now live from that truth.”
Today, I urge you: Stay consistent. Stay Spirit-led. Stay rooted. Let the Holy Spirit remind you of all Jesus has said and done. He is the one who seals your sonship and anchors your faith.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for sending the Spirit of Your Son into our hearts. May we never try to earn what You have freely given. Keep us grounded in truth, led by Your Spirit, and walking in the freedom Christ died to give us. Expose every false voice and strengthen our hearts to remain faithful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection:
• Are there areas in my life where I’ve slipped back into religious performance instead of walking by the Spirit?
• Who speaks into my life—Spirit-led mentors or divisive voices?
• What steps can I take this week to stay rooted in the freedom of Christ?
Take a moment to be still. Let the Holy Spirit speak to your heart. Journal what He reveals. Your freedom is not in what you do—but in who you are in Christ.
Challenge: Share this with 30 people in your contacts and put a smile on Jesus’ face.
