Devotion by Reverend Joseph Antwi

Theme: Raising Spirit-Filled Disciples for the Unleashing Agenda

Opening Reflection

Praise the Lord, Church.

As we continue our journey through the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit is not only revealing power, miracles, and growth—but He is also teaching us reverence, integrity, and responsibility. Acts chapter 5 is a sobering but necessary passage for a Spirit-filled Church.

This devotion reminds us that the Holy Spirit is not an influence, not a feeling, and not a force—He is a Person. And when the Holy Spirit becomes the foundation of a church, we must never treat Him casually.

Before we read, let us slow down.

👉 Open your Bible to Acts 5:1–16.

👉 Pray slowly and sincerely:

“Holy Spirit, open my eyes. Speak to my heart. Let Your Word correct me, shape me, and preserve me.”

Now read carefully. Underline anything that speaks to you—you may need it one day.

1. A United Marriage Can Still Make a Dangerous Agreement (Acts 5:1–2)

The Bible introduces us to Ananias and Sapphira, a married couple. One thing we must acknowledge is this: they were united. They acted together. They agreed together.

But church, unity alone is not enough.

Unity without truth can be dangerous.

📖 “Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it…”

— Acts 5:1–2

This teaches us something very important for marriages in the Church:

👉 Husbands and wives must never agree to test the Holy Spirit.

👉 The only thing couples should disagree with is anything that violates God’s Spirit and God’s truth.

Spirit-filled marriages must be courageous enough to say:

• “This is not right.”

• “This dishonors God.”

• “We cannot agree with this.”

2. The Sin Was Not Ownership—It Was Deception (Acts 5:3–4)

Let us be very clear, Church.

Ananias and Sapphira did not sin by owning property.

They did not sin by selling land.

They did not sin by keeping part of the money.

Peter made it plain:

📖 “While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control?”

— Acts 5:4

The issue was lying to the Holy Spirit.

They made a public pledge and then brought less than what they promised, while pretending it was the full amount.

This speaks directly to us today.

Church, how often do we:

• Make pledges we forget?

• Promise God what we later withdraw?

• Speak boldly but act differently?

Scripture warns us:

📖 “When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it… Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.”

— Ecclesiastes 5:4–5

In the early Church, the Holy Spirit was laying the foundation. And foundations must be pure.

3. Do Not Treat the Holy Spirit Carnally (Acts 5:5–10)

Whenever I read this passage, Church, I feel a deep sobriety.

People do worse things today—and yet they are not judged instantly. But here, Ananias fell dead. Later, Sapphira also fell.

Why?

Because the Holy Spirit was establishing holy fear.

📖 “You have not lied to men but to God.”

— Acts 5:4

This teaches us:

• We cannot manipulate the Holy Spirit.

• We cannot impress God with appearances.

• We cannot be casual with sacred things.

The Holy Spirit is gracious—but He is also holy.

4. Spirit-Filled Marriages Must Guard the Home (Eli as a Warning)

Church, this also reminds us of Eli the priest.

Eli did not correct his sons when they:

• Slept with women at the entrance of the tabernacle

• Abused offerings meant for God

📖 “You honor your sons more than Me.”

— 1 Samuel 2:29

Because Eli failed to deal with sin in his house, his entire family collapsed (1 Samuel 4).

👉 Inability to correct wrong—especially within the home—leads to serious consequences.

Husbands must lovingly confront spiritual violations.

Wives must courageously speak truth.

Silence is not peace when truth is compromised.

5. Fear of God Produces Power, Not Hypocrisy (Acts 5:11–14)

After this judgment, the Bible says:

📖 “Great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.”

— Acts 5:11

And what followed?

• The Church grew

• Signs and wonders increased

• People were healed

• The sick were brought into the streets

📖 “And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.”

— Acts 5:14

Church, fear of God does not kill revival—it fuels it.

6. A Pure Church Carries Healing Power (Acts 5:15–16)

The presence of God became so strong that even Peter’s shadow brought healing.

This was not charisma.

This was not hype.

This was holiness + obedience + reverence.

Closing Prayer

Lord, we thank You for Your Word.

We pray that we will become Spirit-filled disciples who honor the Holy Spirit in our homes, our marriages, and our church.

Keep us from false agreements.

Keep us from careless vows.

Teach us to walk in truth, reverence, and integrity.

May our church carry power because we carry purity.

May our families be preserved because we fear You.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Congratulations, Church.

Let us keep sharing this devotion.

Let us keep one another accountable.

Let us build a church where the Holy Spirit is honored—not tested.

With much love,

Rev. Joseph Antwi 🙏🏾🔥

We are grateful to begin our day in such a powerful way through the word of God.

I’m deeply thankful to our pastor and lady Anita for their hearts and the passion for the Kingdom of God.

The team’s communication is truly amazing🙏

What I truly take away from this is the importance of living a life based on truth. Our Lord we serve is not only the truth itself but also holy.

Uniting to lie - whether in our marriage, at work, at church anywhere else is very dangerous, because it is God we are lying to.
